went shoping with my 2 best friends yesterday and we where looking at fish since my one tank only had a pleco and a few tetras we where looking to see what elce we could get ...
well we came across the platy tank ..they are so cute and the two best friends had a look at them for ages while i looked at the other fish.
well we ended up gettign two platys for the tank..just happens the ones the girls pick out are a light orange feemale and a dark orange with black spots male.

so now im wondering if platys are like guppys do they breed heeps and stuf or do they not breed so well

just wondering if im ognan end up with fry in my tank :) there is room for them...

They breed pretty readily. You should have your hands full.

One suggestion: get one or two more females because the male will keep bothering the female, even when she gets ready to drop a batch of fry. You need some way to divert his attention in order to reduce the stress placed on the female,

at the moment hes playing with the tetras..i dont think hes noticed shes in there yet.could i seperate them when shes about to drop ?

Yes. Actually, that is a very good idea. Just make sure you do it a week before she's ready to drop in order to make sure she doesn't drop the fry prematurely. I would suggest a 5 gallon tank for this purpose.

It might take the male some time to notice the female. It took my red wag over a month to truly notice the females.

That's why I watched all the males in the tank at the store before buying them, I wanted the randiest two they had, and I got them . I still think they had heart attacks and thats why they disappeared....

How big is your tank, maybe you could get more (if you know what you want to do with the fry that is ;) )

I'd definitely get another girl though, as once he does notice her, she's never going to be able to shake him off.... reminds me of some guys I know....

It is often true that you need more females than males, but I have had my platy pair for almost 2 months now, the female has been pregnant for nearly 3 weeks and the male never bothers her. He basically just follows her around everywhere (she is quite a bit bigger than him, although when I got them he was the bigger one, she must have had a growth spurt). Anyway she is in no way stressed out and they are both very healthy. I am planning to keep two of the female fry, however, just in case.

i got thinking yesterday night and i realy like my little platy friends..and so i was talking to dad and well i think iv bullied him i not making a 4th fish tank for me..now what would be a good size for 2 males and 4 females and should i get a few more girls then that or what :)..and do the diffrent coulerd platlys have diffrent names ? just wondering

You might want to try some other type of livebearers as well.

You should select fish that have the same colors (the types you want the fry to have) and then breed them. You should be able to breed them into colors and designs of your choice, but it will take time and patience. Are you up for that?

as with all livebeares they will find each other and before too long abbaies that is if you have a male and female

...... ok i think im gonna have to get a job ay..the $20 for cleaning the house just not enough.
i went to the pet shop and saw the most beautiful male guppys...i wish i had the room for more fish but untill i have my new room i cant put anymore fish tanks in my foom for the risk of the floor collapsing...

i do have a bit of money saved up at the moment and i think i can get a smallish tank 10 gallons? and a filter and a heater for it ..and air pump ect i have allrealdy.

so then i can move my darling platys from the comunity tank over the that..but wait will mum eat the babys? im such a newbi to baby fish...
help.......

i think i need to read up on how to breed platys ( im going to stick with the orange guys :) )
ok i go read an then i will be back with my thorght and questions ..
one thing are breeding nets any good ?

ok back agen..looks like a net breeder is a good idea and yes mum does eat babys..
i think im going to set up the platy tank...... it would look nice and easer to look after when fry are around then keeping them in my big tank with the other fish that would eat them.

thanks for all ur help. i will probaly be back to bounce idears off u all :)
