I wonder if anyone could help me, i think i have read that before you put your new plants in a tank you can put them in a bucket with diluted bleech to kill off snail eggs and other hidden nastys so

1. Am i correct?

2. If so what is the dilution and time etc

Thanks for your help

Jim

I just give mine a good rinse in a bucket of cold water.

I've never heard of using bleach on new plants, only for getting rid of algae which is usually a 19:1 water/bleach solution for a max of 2 mins. There's always a chance it may damage the plants though.

Good luck.

i would be more worried about getting bleach in my tank.

I used the potassium permanganate idea to try and get rid of snails, it may have knocked snails off, but it didn't kill the eggs :( I think it's really difficult to keep snails out of a planted tank. And the best way I've found so far to control snails is botia :) And botia look fantastic too.

I did use this method, many moons ago, to rid some slow growing plants of algae. As long as you rinse the plants well afterwards and then immerse them in a solution of chlorine remover, there shouldn't be a problem with bleach getting in your tank.

Or maybe I was just lucky! :D

follow iggy1's posts. the ratio is correct and will kill any nasties but DONT FORGET iggy1's second post.

plunge into dechlorinator for 15 mins or so after the bleach rince and the plant should be fine and non toxic again.

on the snail point some are good for your tank. if you ever get a malayan trumpet snail leave him be as they burrow in the gravel and turn it over eradicating stagnant bits. they look like ice cream cones and are very easy to identify. other than those i get rid of all other species of snails to save my plants (trumpets dont eat plants, only algae and dirt in the gravel)
