I've pinned an article that I've written - see the Pinned section at the top of this forum. Hopefully it will deal with most planted tank algae concerns and may reduce the need for people to post repeated similar threads regarding their algae issues.

Please feel free to read it. Any comments - positive or negative can be made on this thread.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Reading your article, I have decided not to use any fertilisers yet. I think my algae problem might be down to me ruining the balance by removing too many unwanted plants. I'm going to try reducing my photoperiod to 4 on 2 off 4 on and try feeding fish less for a bit.

Excellent article :) keep those pinned topics coming :D

absolutely excellent article! I am going to order extra light soon and could easily have found myself in the given scenario!

thanks.

Thanks for that article it was well written and best of all you gave enough practical information to get the concept of the problem and guidelines for the solutions yet it wasn't too complicated, long, or technical!

Great article gf225! Reminds me of this thread...

Good job mentioning that algae might be a result of improper lighting (high blue content). Do you think that adding the correct kelvin rating range (5000 - 6700K)would be a good idea?

And keep the pinned articles coming, I'm really lookin' foward to them. :) If I could be so bold, may I suggest another pinned topic on DIY CO2 and proper kelvin rating? Maybe the DIY CO2 idea would be better suited to the DIY forum? :dunno:

Just a quick note to say that in my experience the eSHa Protalon 707 has had bad effects on my vallis. After use the majority of my vallis leaves 'melted' away. This was a short term problem and the vallis soon recovered. No other plants were affected in any significant way.

WK

Edit:
I suspect this was due to the bad state of the vallis leaves prior to treatment. I do not like using algaecides if I can avoid it and so the algae was pretty severe. Maybe the leaves affected were doomed anyway!

Note that blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is known to outcompete plants when the water contains very little or no nitrates.
