 hi guys i just bought a 2 inch albino Oscar today and prepared a 25G for it i am going to keep just the one Oscar in the tank.

i am fairly new to keeping oscars, so need advice on gravel background color, plants (live or plastic), also about other decorations.

i think even for one a 25 gal is to small sorry to bring the bad news

oh ok not sure 55 ok is it i have never had an oscer so as nelly said some do say its ok but not sure by me so um sorry

yes, take the oscar back! if you are just preparing the tank, that means the tank is surely not cycled? oscars dont fair to well in fish in cycles; they sulk big time and get stressed.

also 25G is too small even for a baby. they are dirty buggers and in a tank that small your looking at an awful lot of tank maintenance.

take the fishy back, wait until you get the 55G(or even better look at local ads and try and grab a cheap 75 G second hand, the bigger the better for an oscar). cycle the tank THEN think about buying an oscar after you've researched what they need.

in regards to tank set up, you need a super powerful filter to cope with their mess. use gravel not sand as a substrate as they will waft sand everywhere and it will break your filter!
no plants, they will only eat them and uproot them.

if you wish to have decoration in the aquarium just use heavy rocks. anything else the oscar will pick up and move if it can, and if your unlucky it may drop it hard and crack your tank!

oscars are suseptable to hole in the head disease. to help prevent this water must be in pristine condition at all times and they must be fed a varied diet including vegetables!!

Hi sivabiot
In my opinion a 55 gallon will be to small. Oscars are diggers so no underground filters and plants are pretty much out as well. All of the oscars I have kept has uprooted any plants which in my case was plastic. So all you can put in most tanks with oscars as far as decorations are big rocks and wood. That is when they get big but when they are small it usually isn't a problem. Temp around 72-80. Lighting subdued. They are really messy fish so make sure you have a good strong filter. I like canister filters for my oscars. Eheim is the best but it is expensive to a Rena Filstar will do. I had a oscar in a 55 gallon tank that was 14 inches and the tank was to small for her so that is why I said the 55 gallon would be to small all though you could keep it in there for a short time but if you can't efford a 75 gallon tank as it grows I would take it back to the pet store. Not trying to be mean or anything but that is just my opinion I'm just thinking of the fishs health. Some people will agree with me and some will not but that is o.k. also as long as it is done tastefully. I hope this helps with what ever you decided to do. Good Luck. Have a good one.
