Hello all!

Great forum!
I am new to keeping fish but have had a 50 l tank for about 6 months.
Started with 6 platys and 2" -2.5" plec. Some of the male platys were more aggressive than the others and eventually lost 4 as they were constantly chased round the tank. Eventually added 6 mollies (a mix of silver, dalmation and black). The black sailfin molly managed to calm the remaining two male platys and is now dominant in the tank! He is black with tiny white markings and if you look closely he has some orange spots as well.
After a few months, the plec died and was in the bottom of the tank. Could not see any sign of anything visible on it that looked different. The only thing i could think of was that i had removed some decor plants overnight to clean so it was more visible in the tank.
Since then have lost two female mollies soon after they gave birth to lots of fry. One produced over 20!
First time spotted 3 fry and managed to rescue one. This appears to be a female and is now 2/3 size of other fish. It is white towards rear with black spots and lovely orange colour to front.
Have two smaller fish that i was able to rescue another time and they are doing well too and have similar colouration but in different shades and areas.
Also guilty of assisting mass murder! I released some fry too early from the breeding tank but unfortunately they were still bite sized and lost 14 but rescued 10. Have 12 fry in the breeding tank at present growing nicely.
Try to keep a routine for tank maintenance and the only products i use are easy neo for water changes, nite out II and special blend after water changes as i dont have testing kit. LFS test water when needed but have not for months.
Will post pics when i know how to !!!!!!!

Want to get a new bigger tank as well.
Love the different livebearers but also like the look of cichlids!
Think will stick with livebearers for now.
Looking to have decent sized tank with lots of smaller fish rather a few big fish.
Narrowed it down to a 350 l tank which comes with internal filter but plan to remove internal filter and keep it as a back up as i want an external cannister filter.
This is where i need a bit of advice please. i am prepared to pay a bit more (no treats for a while!) and get something that is going to cost more but is reliable and uses less power. So i am edging towards the Ehiem 3 range. I had thought about two smaller external filters but would like to have the ability to vary the output if needed but cannot find anything other than Ehiems and Fluval FX5 (mixed reviews). Thoughts please!
The reason why i was thinking about 2 externals is that it would be less stressful for fish if something went wrong with one filter.

Sounds like you are having a hard time. Do have any test readings for ammonia/nitrate/nitrite we can look at??

Also, welcome to the forums :hi: and i'm sorry to hear about the loss of your fish.

Hello Barry a very warm welcome to TFF :good:

Advice well I was told "never try and put something in your mouth that's bigger than you're head"   sorry could not help myself.

Two canister filters, redundancy I "like the cut of your gib" as they say well if you have the money a wise move I have the same.

What make and model is one of my favourite subjects to watch on this forum of course there are many types as there are many members on this forum we all have are likes and dislikes so just wait and you will get some good advice very soon.

What do I have? a Fluval 405 18 months and going strong and a tetra tec 1200 10 months and going strong. Both really good filters that I would recommend to you the one thing I would say is maintenance is they key you do not have to do it all that often I usually end up cleaning a canister up once every 3 months.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on and welcome to the forum again :good:

Regards onebto.

Thanks for the welcome folks!

RustedKnight - the loss of fish occurred in the early days and recently i lost two females after they gave birth to lots of fry. Will ask LFS to do water check before next water change and will let you know. The tank has a small internal filter with sponge so i have to be careful not to over clean it when it starts getting clogged. All fish appear to be doing well at the moment.
The only thing i have not done is to starve the fish for one day each week.

Onebto - like it!
I know what you mean about preferences.
Does the Fluval 405 have variable flow output control?.

ta :hey:

I am afraid he fluval 405 has one flow speed only the only way you can adjust the output is by changing the size of the output nozzle or fitting a spray bar.

As for the advice I am glad I could help :good:

Sounds good :good:

And i'm glad the fish seem to be doing well.

Hello!!! Very warm welcome. :) Glad your fish losses have 'diead down' so to speak! Oh dear that's terrible...

Anyhoo, hello again!

Skittles

Skittles, that was terrible.

And Barry, every time I see your avatar i'm in fits of laughter.

Is it from trap door or something else, i swear I remember it from somewhere.

RustedKnight - its great! im still laughing today.
Your far too young to remember Trap door! Its not one of the main characters i dont think.
Better to make someone laugh than cry!

I will be investing in a testing kit for the water and practice on the small tank before i get a bigger one.
I have looked at API and the prices appear to comparable on the net compared to shops (except ebay!).
Are there any other brands that people use on the forum?
Am i correct in saying that liquid drop kits are better/more accurate than strips?

Nah i was watching trap door as a young'un with my mother. So i do remember him, my memory's not as bad as I thought it was :good:

Yeah the liquid kits are more accurate than the strips. I'm still using the strips though, as, well it's £25 cheaper.
