hi there everyone, could someone tell me whether my Blaze has finrot, or if he's turning into a combtail. he has had black edging, and this is the result, thanks in advance

and this is at the beginning of the blackness

I think it might be finrot - that blackness doesn't look too good, and he shouldn't really be losing any length off his fins. I've read here that the thin membranes between the Ray bits often fall away first, leaving a spikeyness.

Are your water stats ok?

Water stats are 0 ammonia 0 nitrites,. waterchange every week ( and when i say w change, i completetly strip it to gravel)
I look after my boy well, and this week I had begun putting finrot meds in as I have been worried for a while, Will his fins grow back once he has healed?

the photas are very helpful. and he sure is handsome:)
i do NOT think this is finrot. the spaces between the rays are too even. what i suppose is happening is that the rays are growing faster than the filaments between which causes the "gaps" you are seeing. black edging isnt always bad. some bettas (depending on color) have darker margins to their fins. to me it looks like natural coloration. i swear i can see clearish bits between the rays-the filaments are growing to fill in the "gaps" between the rays.
have you noticed any actual fin LOSS? or just the new pattern of growth? depending on his age, he may just be going through a "growth spurt" in the fin department :) i had a very wee boy who was given to me as a standard delta..about 4-5 month old i noticed almost what you are seeing (scalloped edging to his fins)and kept his water VERY clean and kept an eye on it(no meds). well, as it turns out, he grew into a beautiful OHM rosetail! they can change very drastically very quickly when juvies-especially with good environment and good food.
my suggestion-keep water top notch and watch for signs of actual erosion. if youve already positive that he is actually losing fins by all means continue meds. if not, id stop with the meds and just wait to see how he morphs. i wouldnt worry too much about the dark margins until you notice actual loss. as stated, some bettas have a dark edge to their fins when fully mature(and based on his coloration i wouldnt be surprised if this is the case with your particular fish) :) he really is lovely!
hope that helps a bit.
cheers!!

Not sure on a diagnosis, but just wanted to say, why are you doing 100% water changes? Do you have a filter?
100% changes are normally only done when bettas have no filter. They are preferable to build up of toxins in the water, but ideally 50% should be the max. Otherwise, the new water could be quite different to the old in terms of pH and just putting the fish straight back in will stress it. On top of keeping him somewhere else while you change the water.

i do full water changes because although he has a filter, its not cycled it takes a week to get the ammonia levels up to 0.25 then i do waterchange

thankyou. i see what you mean, but his fins had the black edging when i bought him, the blackness went and this edging was the result. i dont know if his dorsal has lost finnage. what do you think by looking at the photos

oh i see. the pics werent in "order" so i guess i assumed the edging was new. here is the likely scenario-black edging from ammonia burns from poor conditions until you got him. once he was in better water with good food, the fins began to heal (no more black) and now he is just growing as normal and fins beginning to heal (hence the clearish spots i *think* i see in the fins in the photos). if that is the case his fins will regrow just fine (and somewhat quickly too). clearish bits will color up with time.
so long as you dont see any FURTHER fin loss, he will be just fine. handsome guy too!
cheers

thanks loraxchicks. he sure is a beauty. hes very sociable to comes to say hello whenever we are by the tank. hes been upgraded to a 64L tank, so now i'm thinking tankmates? he has an apple snail already but try to think of nice small fish to be friends with him. i dont mind keeping him on his own either. I'm just thinking of options xx. thanks for the advise
