Okay, last night I went out and bought some ghost shrimps for my main tank. As I was putting in the shrimps, I found a Molly fry just swimming at the surface in the corner of my tank. I couldn't believe it because I was so happy. I quickly netted it up into a seperate container to keep it safe from other fish. My question is:

1. What do I feed it since it's so small?
2. What temp should it live in?
3. Would it be okay if I put a ghost shrimp in the seperate container to scavenge the food that i will feed the fry?

Any other helpful tips are welcome! Thanks!

Firstly, Congratulations on your baby mollies! I can't wait until mine could breed soon :p

1. Baby brine shrimp/egg, super crushed flake foods is also possible.
2. 78-82F
3. I don't think shrimp can harm the babies. They scavenge mostly on dead things I think. So I think they could be a good pair :)

okay first question...what kind and how many fish do you have in your tank?

I suggest letting the baby out of the separate container, as it will stunt its growth...I had 20 mollies/guppies born in my tank in the past month and all of them are still alive...I highly suggest letting it out...they will grow much faster in the main tank...also, i have seem my adult mollies and guppy try to eat the babies on multipul occasions and they have never caught one before...the babies are very fast and very good at keeping safe...if you are really set on saving this one (if you just found it, I wouldn't count on only having one!) then i would just heavily plant the tank...the baby will eat any algae and I also just crush up my flakes very finely...(they are high in protein...I use omega one tropical flakes)...Another thing...the shrimp will try to catch the baby...The ones at the pet store go after theirs all the time and I have seem mine almost catch a few of the babies...

One more thing, I know it's exciting finding a baby/babies in the tank, but let me warn you, mollies, guppies, platies, etc. breed like RABBITS!!! So if you don't keep a close eye and separate them as soon as you can sex them, you breeding can get out of control and overpopulate my tank...I am giving mine away and moving the rest into a new tank (males in one tank, females in another because they breed SOOO much...just a word of warning!

good luck! hope i helped!
Megan :)

depending on the size of your "separate container" - - if we are talking 10 gallons - you are better off keeping it separate.

Adults can and will catch fry and eat them - - yes fry are fast and can sometimes escape, providing you have adequate cover but chances are after a couple of days you will not see your baby anymore.

sorry, my bad...i meant if it was in a small, unfiltered container or in a breeding trap inside the main tank :)
