Hello everyone.

As the title says I'm new to fish keeping and so far reading this forum has been a great help to a newbie like me. I have always wanted to keep fish and so last week I decided to take the plunge and bought the Fluval Roma 90. Yesterday, as per your very informative guide, I started the fishless cycle with Kleen off ammonia.

The tank currently has three live plants, two in substrate and one on a bridge decoration, and some Dorset pea gravel. The water is a bit milky at the moment, but found topic on here saying its usual for new tanks and I plan to leave it for a day or two before I panic, I hope.

Lastly I live in the Southampton area where the water is quite hard. The pH is about 7.8 is this likely to cause me any problems?

Thanks for all the info so far and hope to make some new friends along the way.

Welcome to the forum

Hard water isn't a problem, you just have to be a little careful which fish you choose to stock, that's all.

At least it'll make your cycle go a bit faster; the bacteria like harder water! Oh, and well done for choosing to fishlessly cycle; it really is well worth it, even though you have to wait to get your first fish

It would be nice to have fish in straight away, but I wanted to do it right. I keep looking at the tank just staring at the water willing to be ready, but I know I'm about a month away. Must remain patient.

Welcome!  I started fish keeping last summer and this forum has been a big help to me.  Hope you enjoy it here.  Of course we will all want to know how your tank is going and what fish you are hoping to stock!

Welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy it here ^_^ What do you have in mind as far as stock?

Welcome!

I have the same issue myself. I have hard well water with a very high pH. Just spend this time while your tank is cycling to do research! There are a number of high pH options, especially if you like ciclids!

to TFF! Hope you enjoy it here.

Thanks everyone, as far as stocking goes I was going to ask people opinions. I would like nice bright vibrant colours if possible, a pleco if suitable for size of tank.

Hiya!! If you want to make a thread on stocking advice and opinions if you haven't already, then go to general tropical fish discussion and make a thread there. We will do our best to help

Hi and welcome!!! I started fish keeping back in August and this site is a life savor! :p I would go by the information on cycling on this site because I am fairly certain I was given some rotten advice from my LFS which could be the cause of the problems I ran into when I first got fish :/. Good luck with your tank and all it's glory! ^-^
