Hi,

I have only just brought 2 fish for my tank, and the store had "Malawi Blue Cichlid", as a description, and thats all.

Has anyone any ideas which one it could be.

The body seems to be a silver-grey-blue colour with vertical grey stripes.
The top and back fin's have a slight tinge of yellowy-green.

They seem to be a bit more timid than the others, and are having trouble getting the food.

Thanks

D.

that name isn't really common, it's probably better if you could post a pic for more accurate ID of your fish...

Here we go:

looks like some kind of alunocara, although the dark spots on the side are very characteristic of the crytocara moorii(blue dolphin), so not sure maybe an hybrid, im sure someone could tell you for positive though.

cheers stewy

I agree with a bove 2 posts

looks like a hybrid Moorii is in there for sure ;) would be interesting to find out what alanocara is in there ( if there is one )

Thanks for the info.

I am quite new, and my book does not have any Moorii's in it.
Could this be known as anything else?

What might help a little, is that the blueness in the fish has been "exagerated" because of the camera flash and the angle to the fish.

It's a some sort of hap...I think its the O. lithobates....do you have a side way pic where we could se the whole fish profiles.....also you could check out cichlid-forums.com and check their profile section...

No way is that an Otopharynx lithobates .... a fish as expensive as that would be properly identified at the store.

just about all haps and peacocks look drab and spotty like that before they develop into sexual maturity. I doubt you'll be able to ID this fish until it takes on it's adult coloration. For sure it will have alot of blue in it though.
Mystery Fish can be fun!
