Yeah, went today - not overly impressed. My old local maidenhead in Truro used to be great, but the Edinburgh one at the moment has very uninteresting fish, only one small tank of plants and a slightly weird (and small) site. Plus their pet shop licence hasn't been granted yet so they can't actually sell any fish! Hopefully it'll improve, but not worth rushing down at the moment.

Yeah, hopefully everything will be smooth once the council can sort out their license.

Even shops have to cycle systems!! Give them time to get everything running smoothly! :good: You would be more upst if they rushed it and stocked all number of exciting fish and the whole lot ended up looking less than perfect from fluctuating water.

Better support you lfs than complain before they even get started! Be more positive people! :good:

Well, they looked fully stocked - just that the stock was all terribly generic. Edinburgh has been crying out for a LFS with a decent selection since OutsideInside closed and I'd really hoped this would be it. Like I said, hopefully they'll improve though!

Well, according to the blog:

"We are really pleased with the results so far and have been working carefully to slowly stock up the fish house with a wide selection of healthy, quality livestock for opening (although rarer species will arrive over the coming weeks).

However a curve ball means we will be unable to sell ANY fish initially when we open…

As with any aquatics store we require a pet shop license in order to sell vertebrate animals (in our case – fish). Usually issued within a matter of days, we were still conscious that we had a very tight lead time for opening, so within two hours of the first fish arriving on the final system we rushed down to City of Edinburgh Council to make our application as we were now ready to demonstrate our working systems to the authorities.

We were astonished to be informed that the process would take between 6 weeks to 6 months, despite the procedures and requirements being the same as the many other areas across the UK where we hold licenses which are granted within a matter of days. How we were supposed to submit our application 6 months before signing our lease we’ll never know!"

I worked at a MA when newly opened and we had full stock of generic stock too. Fish that are generally reasonably hardy/sell fast enough to not be sitting around long and fish that are cheaper to buy in.

Imagine the cost of filling those systems with fish right from scratch!? The costs are insane! Got to pack out the systems as much as possible and keep an eye on everything. Last thing you want is to lose everything!

Just the same as anyone setting up a tank, you cycle it and dont chuck in the entire stock and delicate ones right off. It would def be frowned on if, as a member of this forum, you said thats what you had done! And then add in the demand and pressure customers will create!

Did you speak to the staff? Find out who was doing to fish orders? If there is something you think would be great for them to get it, why not ask them if its possible? They might have blown their budget for now or be waiting for systems to settle but they might take note of the fish you are interested in and work it into their plans.

Amazing how many people complain that shops dont stock interesting fish/the fish they want and yet no one bothers asking said shop if they could be got in. With so many fish to choose from, cant get it right and read peoples minds so just stock what you feel like until someone asks :p

I worked at a Maidenhead and they said one of the small tanks alone would cost about £300 so It is a lot to fillt hem all!

Systems are just settling in. I know more interesting species will come once the filters have matured.
