Hi all
Thanks for the add.
Would really appreciate some starter set up advice.
I have had my 100 litre tank for a few years, initially having cold water fish. As they died (hopefully of old age), I'll be honest, I lost a bit of interest and packed it away.
Various people recommended tropical and i started up again, mainly with tetra and was mostly successful.
Unfortunately, when my stock was quite good, suddenly they all started dying. A local supplier tried to diagnose based on pictures and info, concluding it was either white spot or the nitrate (?) too high.
Out of 30 fish only 3 and a particularly stubborn snail survived.
With care, I've cleared it out as best i can.
Just a few (new) live plants and stones.

Now my question (thank God i hear u cry).
Please can anyone make suggestions as to good housekeeping before adding the fish please.
1. I want it highly planted (been researching bonsai).
2. I want it as natural but coloured and textured as possible (yes I'm a gardener).
3. I am wanting to upgrade my filter and lighting, preferably to something that changes as single setting rather than sequence (quite like the look of spots) but most also promote plant growth.
5. As mentioned, I do like tetra (and similar) but would like an amicable mix. Again like the plants, mixed colour, sizes and shapes. My son is desperate for aquarium frogs!!!
Also ratios of how many etc.
Thank you so much for reading x

Yes please read up on cycling :)
You can fin you GH on your local water providers website. Please record the unit of measurement as well as the number :)

@Ralfie As you give your location as Leicester, type your postcode in here https://www.stwater.co.uk/my-supply/water-quality/check-my-water-quality/
This will give your hardness in three different units, you want the number for "Hardness German". That is the same as dH, one of the two units used in fish keeping.

I am wanting to upgrade my filter and lighting,
Which filter do you have now, and what type is the lighting? From what I can see, the lights you have now are not typical fluorescent tubes. Can you take a photo of the underside of the lid so we can see them properly.

My son is desperate for aquarium frogs!!!
That would need a second tank just for frogs. They shouldn't be kept with fish for a couple of reasons.
African dwarf frogs are almost blind and find their food by smell - by which time any fish in the tank will have eaten it all.
Frogs are very sensitive to chemicals so if the ish ever got sick, the fish medication would harm the frogs.

As mentioned, I do like tetra (and similar) but would like an amicable mix.........Also ratios of how many etc.
Tetras need soft water, and if that's what you have you have they need to kept in groups of at least 6 of the same species. But more than 6 is better.
