I "inherited" a 10 gallon tank from my mom and have a Gold gourami in it with some neons and a few corys. I have been reading a blue million fish books and all the posts I can find on the Internet. I just bought a 55 gallon to set up and am trying to get the best advice for stocking it. I (of course <g>) am getting differing opinions on what will work. I know the Gold gourami will go to the 55 gallon due to his/her eventual size. I like the Gold gourami's personality, stately and majestic, I think it knows it owns the tank. It will take a flake from my fingers and investigated while I did the first "vacuuming" and partial water change. I am kind of retentive about pH, nitrates, and nitrites and was checking the levels every day at first. They are staying okay, but I had some old gravel that may have helped colonize bacteria? The neons and corys will stay in the little tank in peace when the gourami moves to the 55.

I like Black Phantom Tetras, Green Moss Tiger Barbs, Opaline and Pearl gouramis and realize it seems they are more "pushy" from reading books and posts. I was hoping I could mix fish in the 55 gal who would stay on different levels and cope with each other. If I work with any/all these species, what would be the best algae eaters and bottom cleaners? I saw Rainbow fish at the aquarium/fish store, but don't know how they work with anything else. I am willing to rethink any of these fish if they will be a really bad mix, but obviously it must include the Gold gourami.

Other than fish, I raise and show Australian Cattle Dogs for the past 15 years as a hobby (read obsession) and have won many honors with them. They are not for novice owners, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find I like "pushier" fish just as I tended toward pushier dogs. I don't think I want to raise fish, just enjoy watching them.

Thanks for having me on this message board and answering any of my questions if you can. I want to have the best tank possible and healthy content fish. I also hope I am doing this message board right as the set-up is different than my dog lists. If the post is too long, I apologize.

Hi and :hi: to the forum
You might get more advice in the Beginner's Questions place though. I don't know much about stocking tanks so I won't give out any advice. Good luck though ;)

:hi: Welcome to TFF. I'm sure you will be able to find plenty of help with your tank and gourami here. Since this board is just for introductions you might want to post your stocking questions in the Gourami and Anabantiods section. They should be able to come up with all your answers. :D
