Hi everyone,
My 11yr old son is the aquarist in our home. He had a betta tank for a few years that I primarily cared for. Now that he is a little older, he has just started a 20-gal tank with 3 black skirt tetras, 4 red minor tetra, and 3 blue mystery snails. He also chose java fern to go in the tank. We are finishing up our second week and look forward to learning from everyone here!

Hello and welcome to the forum! :hi:

Great to see your so is interesting in fish keeping.

Is the 20g tank a 20g “long” or a 20g “high”. (As the name suggests, the 20g long is much longer than the 20g high)

It is recommended to keep BST (Black Skirt Tetras) in groups of 6 or more. 6 is the absolute minimum, 8-12 is better.

I have never heard of Red Minor Tetras, so I can’t help you there.

If you have any questions on live plants or anything else, feel free to ask! Enjoy the forum. :fish:

Red minor tetra is another name for serpae tetra. These are one of the nippiest tetras in the hobby; this tendency to nip can be curtailed to some extent by having a large shoal. Besides getting more black skirts, I strongly recommend having at least 10 red minors (serpaes)

I once had serpaes and within a day every fish in the tank had bits missing. They went back to the shop.

Welcome. I love that you're helping your son with the hobby. I really thought my boy would like fish so I got a tank. He threw the house keys in the tank and since then it's been more my obsession.

He's two and a half :)
