New Guppies Dieing

Guppy farming is a big business and as for most businesses its not about quality any more its all about quantity Guppies are produced and available in large numbers at all times.
This is actually what I was talking about
why are we seeing more and more good quality Guppies these days If anything inbreeding has done more good then bad .30 years ago there were not that many shops or many guppy breeders about like there are now you can get almost any colour or fin shape. Know one will ever convince me that all these problems with Guppies is down to inbreeding it is nonsense.
You are quite right; I should have picked my words more carefully! As a former pedigree rabbit breeder, I know about inbreeding and line breeding and the good qualities you can get.
I should have said bad breeding rather than inbreeding; breeding large numbers of fish with no regard to the choice and quality of the parent stock is the problem, I'm sure we'd agree :)

agreed :) :fish:

Those ribbon fin guppies are stunners, I'd sure love to have a couple of those lovely young boys swimming happily in my community tank!

OP, I'm sorry your guppies died. Losing fish is always hard. Good luck with your remaining fish.

I am going to disagree with this completely. The only way in which poor breeding enters the picture is if you select strictly based on appearance and do not take health of the progeny into account. Completely random breeding of adults of a single species may make the fry a little less desirable but it will not leave them with health problems. I love the generic "fancy" guppies but have no desire to breed for particular traits. What I end up with is a perpetual breeding colony of unselected guppies in my tank. They will never win any show points, even if I was foolish enough to show them, because I have not selected them for that. Instead they are a stable breeding colony that is producing beautiful fry year after year while I just sell off all of the adults at premium prices. The adults demand a premium price at club auctions because people recognize the value of healthy pretty enough looking guppies.
This is my unselected breeding colony shortly before a sale of adults.

This tank of endlers is also grossly inbred from a starting group of 3 only pairs of wilds several years ago. Again, I sell off adults frequently and just keep the fry.

Inbreeding does not cause problems but poor selection practices certainly can.
