All in the mix.....

The south american gar (not really a gar but a pike Characin) is a Boulengerella lateristriga.

You sure like your long thin predators dont you, i had needle fish a few years back and they were a real pain in the butt to feed as they would only eat live fish and tadpoles, river shrimp used to use them as rafts to sit on where the other fish couldnt eat them and they didnt even flinch. Interesting fish though, very entertaining to watch them treble in thickness as they feed, oh and watch your fingers, mine used to bite and it flipping hurt.

Yeh i knew its not a true Gar but a pike characin (dont have space for tank the size needed for a real garfish  )
Me and Paul_MTS thought it was a Boulengerella lateristriga (thanks for helping confirming that) as thats what i had up until sunday when mine vanished without a trace. :S
The tank is completely covered other than each end where theres a gap i can just squeeze me finger into but no access from inside as the spray bar goes across it, so im certain it couldnt have escaped.
Lost the large needle in the night  so rang wildwoods but have to ring back and speak to fish house manager to try and get credit. While i was on the phone i asked what they had been feeding the needle and they told me frozzen mussel, krill, bloodworm and whitebait etc.
Everywhere else says that its rare for them to eat anything other than live, im wondering now how long they were in the shop and if they had eat at all in there. :/

How many needle fish did you buy? They need to be in groups of 3 or more otherwise there is aggression between them, it is quite likely that if you had a pair the smaller one may have killed the other over night. The other thing to take into consideration is what else is in the tank, if your B.lateristriga was prehaps eaten by another fish the same fish could have attacked the needle fish.

I brought 2 needles as thats all they had and the gar (for ease of typing). The 3 bonding in to a group straight away as the gar like company also. There is only 1 possable fish (ornate birchir) but it seems to unlikely to me. The needle that died was looking bit "crooked" compared to the very straight smaller one. There was no sign of damage from attack to the needle, all fins, beak etc perfect condition. Must just have been the stress.
Im hoping these to will get on ok, if not ive got a 5ft tank one will go into, or Paul will have the needle. I hope they do ok because as you said, i love the long pike looking preds.
Thanks for your information. Much appreciated.

How big is your ornate bichir? Another member here (Chali) lost a good sized rocket gar (Ctenolucius hujeta) to her ornate when it got hungry one night just showing that you should never under estimate the swallowing ability of bichirs.

Oh i never underestimate birchirs, not after watchin me senegal at 3" swallow a 2" whitebait!
I wouldnt have thought the birchir be quick enough.
He is a big bugger, i did say to paul other day the birchir has grown to big to quick.
Dont wanna get rid of him but dont want him killing every thing either.
:/

Yeah big bichirs and thin fish dont mix, they just grab onto one end and swallow like snakes, i've watched my 18" ornate eat some pretty big fish (frozen ones of course), and dont be fooled that bichirs arent quick, their preffered hunting technique is to lay at the surface at night pretending to be a log and then lunge at whatever comes close.
