So I had a betta for 2 1/2 years in a 5 gallon aquarium and he died the other day. :( I want to get more fish now but I'm not sure what to get. I was thinking about getting an angelfish. Is this a good idea or should I get something smaller?

Personally I would consider something smaller, adult angelfish can grow fairly large, especially vertically, and a 5 gallon tank does not allow much room for movement whatsoever for a fish of that height. Also, with larger fish such as that, they will produce larger amounts of waste that will dirty the small volume of water in the tank very quickly and call for frequent (annoying) maintainence.

Consider fish that do not get much larger than 1 to 1.5" adult size if you are going to keep the 5 gallon setup. Unfortunately in most cases conditions are not roomy enough in a 5 gallon to allow for most species of fish.

Personally I have Celestichthys margaritatus (Galaxy Rasbora/Celestial Pearl Danio) [they reach about 3cm MAX] in a heavily planted 5 gallon setup, raising them from newly hatched. If you are considering keeping this fish I would keep it with the intent to breed them, as native stocks have been diminished because of overfishing for the aquarium industry, and by breeding them pressure can be removed from the already depleted natural populations.

Anglefish can grow very large. It all depends on whether you want a single medium sized fish, a pair of smaller fish or even a small school of tiny fish! If you can tell me what your after I can probably recommend something! :)

A 5 gallon tank will be too small for an angelfish, they get quite large and need tall tanks.
I would personally look at a pair of small fish or another betta but its up to you, have you any ideas at the moment as to what kind of fish you want? Maybe a pair or is it just a single fish your looking for?
You could have a read of this topic, although it is suggesting fish for a 10 gallon it may give you a starting point as to what to look at for your 5 gallon tank.
