my husband and i decided that for our 20th anniversary :) we would buy ourselves a new tank, 110g to go with our 60g.

the 60g is a semi aggro. tank so we dicided that our new tank would be for more peacful fish. ie. tetras.

We started off with 6 head and tail light tetras, cute fish, we also have 6 white clouds, and 6 harlquins. then my husband added 6 dwarf neon rainbows, different species, the new neons were very scared and huddled together tightly on the bottom. my husband couldn't believe what he witnessed next, the tetra worked them selves so that they were next to the neons, if the neons moved away the tetras moved with them. within a very short time the tetra had worked themselves into the group, and a short while later they brought the new fish out to explore there new home.

has anyone ever seen this before, they weren't even the same species, my husband now calls the head and tail lights the tank police.

i thought i would post, just a cute little story. :*)

Thanks for sharing that lovely story, Zull.

It must be great finding fish to stock such a hugh tank! What other fish do you plan to get for it? :)

were are going to get some more tetras, maybe even guppies, swords, and some bottome feeders, just a little at a time. thanx for asking.

What a great story. As I am still new to this hobby, and find myself constantly amazed by the intelligence fish can show. Many people do not realize their ability to think and feel.

By the way, I am terribly jealous of both your tanks. I desperately want bigger tanks. My poor goldfish are stuffed in a 10 gallon (I only have 5) and I am trying to save to get them a decent tank and my tropical tank is a 20 gallon hex which is basically worthless, difficult to clean and very little surface space. Oh well, all things in time :)

missy, is the hex that much of a problem, i was looking into one next, with posibility of tring discus or angels only, but hearing the hex isn't easy maybe i'll look at something else. thanx

Hex tanks are not very good tanks at all. They usually are taller than they are wide which gives them a small surface area which leads to poor aeration. Its hard to get a good filter to work with a hex tank because of their strange construction. They are usually small (less than 10 gallons) I have rarely seen a 20 gallon hex but I only saw it once. Discus wouldn't work in a small tank, they need good water parameters and small tanks are notorious for quickly changing conditions. Angels aren't as sensitive as Discus but I still wouldn't risk it. The best (and most popular) style tank is the rectangular one because it has the best surface area.

Not all hex tanks are that small. I have a 42gal. hex and the Emperor 280 filter looks like it was build specifially for the tank, it fits perfectly.

Now I realize that it does not have the surface are and therefore I can't have as many fish in a standard configuration but it's a perfect fit for a corner.

I began with 10 neons, added some bottom feeders, a couple dwarf gouramis, and three bright swordtails. There is constant movement at each level of the tank with plenty of color.

The biggest drawback that I've found is that it is hard to for many live plants to thrive because of the depth. I will post a picture soon.

Try some dwarf anubias - I've got a 22" tank myself and the dwarf anubias is doing so well its actually flowering, even though I've only got 30 watts of light (plus reflectors) on a 25 gallon tank.

thanx guys  , i was wondering about a bigger hex, our lfs carries 40g, and i think a 60g hex, maybe i will give it a try later when i'm ready to give the discus a try.
