as it says, ive set an aquarium tank up and ordered my water test kit. at the moment the water is at the temp required and the tank is filled with tap water and declor.

its been running for a day and a half now and all the bubbles have gone.

do i now use pure immonia to cycle my tank? this seems best way reading about, or do i use fish food or hardy fish, which seems very unfair to the fish if i'm honest and doesn't sit right with me.

my tank is 140 litre and am using a filter which is for a 200-500 (tetratec ex1200)

any advice and links to pure immonia would be helpful

thanks :)

Hi there,

Yep you need to add ammonia now. I was able to find it at Homebase, it's labelled as "Household Ammonia" and is in a white bottle. If you look up at the top of the page on the forum, at the blue bar, you'll see the "Calculator" button. Go there and put in the information it asks for in order to work out how much ammonia to add in order to get 4ppm.

After a week or so, the ammonia levels in your tank will drop to 0 (you'll be able to use your new test kit for this :)) and then just dose it at 2-3ppm from that point until the end of your fishless cycle.

Hope that makes sense!

I would actually go as far to say put it up to 30 c it will only help! Reducing the temp back down will not harm the bacteria but the higher temp allows them to multiply faster.
