Today I got my first betta fish ever, and it's a really awesome fish. The problem is, he keeps getting drawn back by the filter. I turned it off tonight because the fish looked miserable. I don't want him to have to deal with that, so does anyone have a suggestion for a good and quiet internal filter that doesn't create a current?

A sponge filter might be the way to go, you could also try fitting a sponge over your intake to slow it down.

I don't have any experience with bettas but I do have a fluval U4 internal filter. It has 3 options for water movement (top, bottom or an in-built spray bar). I have mine on the spray bar setting and my fish love it, its great. They come in 4 sizes so you can choose the one most appropriate for your tank size (my U4 is on a 4 foot, 200 litre tank). Not sure if one of these would suit your needs but in my experience they are awesome.
