New Filter

How long would it take for a new filter to get up and running with decent bacteria whilst running alongside an old filter?

This is without media swaps.

i have read on other forums that it can take as little as 3 weeks, however, better to be safe than sorry.

question in this topic. I have recently set up a new tank. I have installed a new filter with out a older one belong side it. I have never had a problem with setting up new filters NEVER, nether has my dad who had tropicals.

Were it me,, I would let the new filter run along with the old filter for minimum of three weeks. Assuming the old filter has a bacteria colony ,then some bacteria will also colonize the new filter.
Process could be much quicker by removing filter material from the old filter and placing as much as will fit in the new filter to help the new filter establish the needed bacteria Quicker.

Lol i mean that i have never had a problem with installing a new filter and was just trying to say that. i see where your coming from, what if you rub the 2 sponges together to rub the bactirea from one of them on to the other or doesn't it work like that

Dunno, I aren't really in a rush for it to happen or concerned about anything.

Just wanted to know so I know when I'm getting proper filtration from them both

Well yea you will be. Everyone is saying put a new and old filter in, the alternative to that is to leave the tank running with no fish for a week, after that put fish in there and see how it goes. I do that I do.

Waste of time, just put mature media in the new filter, instant.
