New Filter Media.

Hi,

What would you say is the best way to change filter media? My filter media is sponge and its gone from white to brown now so its time to change it, its working FINE though, Ammonia and Nitrites are ALWAYS 0, Nitrates at 10-20 (Alot of plants) But when i take it out its going to loose the bacteria, so what is the best way i can change it?

Firstly, you dont need to change sponges just because they are no longer white! The only time you need to change sponges is when they are literally falling apart.

However, if and when you do need to change some filter media, do so a little at a time, most being 1/3 in one go, so you dont lose too much bacteria, then wait another few weeks before changing anymore to allow the bacteria time to grow on the new media.

yeah I know it mate, never drunk in there though, used to drink in the Eagle on the high street before it was bought out, or the Queen Charlotte occasionally
