New Discus Tank

regarding the background i just use a plain black bacground , i love it , it really makes the colours of the fish stand out!!

i went to the craft shop and just used A4 black card and stuck them on individually, you cant even notice the joins in the paper when it is on! Thats what i reccomend to you , even if you dont like it when its done, you can just tank it off!

Thanks

Adam
sweet tank!! :good: i can't wait to get a tank big enough for discus.

as for the background i have the strait black as well and it really does bring out a lot of color. i've also read, but don't know if it's true, that fish are more relaxed if they can't see in all directions out of the tank. not sure if i believe but like i said for the color of the fish alone it's worth it

Hi Heather, Thanks for the complement!! Loving reading about your wee angels too.

Tobigara, It took me ages to get there with the tank but it is worth the wait.

I have taken more pics as was requested.!

New tank layout - seems to change every water change so that i get into all nooks and crannies

Bet you wished you never asked for pics.

Did my water stats today and im sitting at
PH 6.8
Ammonia 1
Nitrite 0

Water changing tomorrow and the next few days to get rid of the ammonia!!

Hope the pics work now

Thanks Squidman!

I am almost there. Plants are not firing the way i hoped. They have good substrate and the lighting should be fine although not great. I am thinking about adding reflectors think that would be better??

Also what bulbs should i have? i have a natural and day one this now. Should i change them?

Hopefully the pics will now work. I forgot to resize them though i think. Never mind.

My stock as of today is

2 discus
2 angels
14 Cory (10 Gold shoulder, 2 bronze, 2 albino)
2 Rummy nose Tetra
3 Zebra Danios
2 L183 starlight plecs
1 Common Bristlenose (1 inch)
2 spotted Talking Cats - think these are going to go
8ish Apistogramma fry - lost count as think the angels got a few

Water Stats were
Ph 7
Ammonia - 0.25 (daily water changes until it hits zero)
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0

L002 plecs were sold
Next door neighbour took 3 of the angels. Then his angels spawned the minute the new angels were added.
Think i might take the talking cats back to the LFS and get rummy nose tetras instead.

I am in two minds between rummy nose tetras and white cloud minnows. What does everybody think

Rummy nose, i just prefer them. Are you using RO or are you lucky and your water is naturally soft.

Chris

The water up here is naturally soft. Ph out the tap is between 6.2 and 6.8. Which is what i want my tank at. Just have to dechlorine and in she goes. Makes life a little easier.

What do you think of the stocking? If i get rid of the danios and the talking cats (one of which is pretty big) how many tetras could i add??

I have a new problem.

I split the angels as i said and kept the two that he didn't want. I didn't think they had paired and couldn't tell what sex they were but last night i found out there sex.

I now have about 100-200 hundred eggs laid on two Amazon sword leaves. Now this causes two problems.

1 I love the angels and am so chuffed that i have got them breeding. Also I am pleased that my water stats must be doing ok if they are breeding.

2. I have discus and the angels are being quite violent towards them, if they most past the half way line of the tank. This is fine as the discus are staying at that end of the tank this now. I get three more discus next week so that will cause a problem. I don't want my discus hurt!!

Think i am going to have to get rid of my angelfish!! I am absolutely gutted. I tried to play the "I need a new tank" line with the wife but she was having none of it when i explained it would have to be about 20-30Gallons at least!! Gutted.

If i remove the eggs to a breeding trap will this get rid of the anger? I have a small tank that my wife has agreed to let me put up if i can hatch the eggs. Would just put it bare bottomed and i think it would do for the short term then when she sees how cute they are a new tank may be purchased (crosses fingers)

The anger is most likely caused by the angles guarding the eggs. I have not breed angelfish but I know that for discus, you can put the leaf in a small gravel-less tank with a sponge filter. Feed them microworms for the first 3-5 days and then BBS. And congratulations. If they were the parents they will most likely be spawning again soon.

thanks fishaholic, ye they are aggressive defending the patch. I have read tolaks pinned topic on it and some useful info there. I am going to move the leaf to a breeding trap in my main tank as it allows me to cycle the smaller tank and will allow me to stop the aggression. I think it should be two weeks until they spawn again (am i right?) so this should give me time to move them on to somebody who would like to breed them.

I am seriously gutted to be losing them.

Its actually really funny as my next door neighbours angels spawned the day that he took my other 3 angels and my 2 spawned 4 days later!!

Two weeks sounds about right. I suppose its enough time if you can find someone fast enough.
