gonna keep this one minimal....not as minimal as it stands but a lot more minimal than my main tank, it's 12x8x8 inches and hold about 13 litres (3 gallons).....it's currently cycling (the filter and heater have been cycling the water in a pet carrier til i got this to speed things up) :)

wow, that is small...

If you're not planning on using it any time soon, just keeping water in it is probably not going to help prepare it for fish. (since there is no source of amonia to feed the nitrifying bacteria, the tank will not really 'cycle')

Another approach is the just keep the filter for this one in your main tank. Similarly, you may be able to just put some of the filter media from this filter into the filter for your main tank. This way, when you need the spare tank for an emergency, you just move the smaller filter into your spare tank(or just move the media back to your small filter if you tried the 2nd idea), fill with dechlorinated water, and your tank is instantly ready.

Oh, and yes, that us a cute little tank. Hopefully you won't need to make use of it as a hospital, but good to have just in case!

I'd honestly sooner set that up as a shrimp tank or something instead of a hospital tank. Small tanks have less stability, and QT tanks generally shouldn't be less than 10 gallons.

It is cute though.

As was said before, no ammonia source no cycling. Putting the filter in your main tank is the best idea. Another thing to watch if you intend to put fry in that set up is that type of filter will allow fry to enter or be sucked in. A tip in that case would be to stand the lower portion of the filter in a pot of gravel to cover the slits.
It IS a cute little tank but will cost about the same to run as a slightly larger and more stable one would but hey, good luck :good:
