At the moment I have a 17 litre betta tank which is fully cycled. I was given a plastic goldfish tank recently, I'm not sure how big but I'm guessing around 30 litres, and wanted to set it up. I currently have it cycling in the garden shed with a small scoop of gravel from my betta tank in the bottom. I was wondering if instead it would be best to place the goldfish filter in the betta tank for some time (how long?) and then put it back in the goldfish setup? Or would it be best to carry on as I am (its only been cycling for a few hours now though) and add a plant or two from my betta tank? I have java moss and a marino moss ball I could add, though I'm also worried that the cold water could kill them...

How are you cycling it? Are you adding ammonia to the tank?

Yes you could put the goldfish filter in the betta tank to seed it. Alternatively you could cut the betta filter foam in half and put it into the goldfish filter.

The plants will not die if they are in coldwater (16 degrees or above will be fine)

And finally... The tank isn't big enough for any goldfish of any type. Sorry, but that's just a fact.
The only goldfish suitable for tanks are fancy goldfish.
You need 20gal (80l) for the first goldfish and 10 gal (40l) for each additional fish. Also the should really be kept in pairs or more as they do enjoy the company of another fish.
So for 2 fancy goldfish you need a 30Uk Gal (120l) tank or above. You will also need a filter designed for tanks 60Uk Gal (240l) or more.

Ok thanks, but which option would be best/fastest? And if I was to put the filter in the betta tank how long should I leave it there for?

I was going to cycle just with fish food, not sure where I can get ammonia and I've heard fish food works almost as well.

Oh and Im not actually using the tank for goldfish, no there's no need to worry.

Hi. I was just wondering if you are keeping your betta fish in a coldwater setup?

Betta fish are "hardy" bud really should be in a heated tank..somewhere around the 24 c mark is sufficient :good:

No of course Im not keeping my betta in a coldwater setup, that's why I said I was worried about my tropical plants being moved to the coldwater tank.

Would be really grateful if someone could answer my actual question, which option would be best/fastest? And if I was to put the filter in the betta tank how long should I leave it there for?

Ok thanks, but which option would be best/fastest? And if I was to put the filter in the betta tank how long should I leave it there for? Fastest would be removing half of the filter media from the bettas already cycled filter and putting it into the new one. If you put the goldfish filter into the bettas tank then I'd say 1-2weeks ish.

I was going to cycle just with fish food, not sure where I can get ammonia and I've heard fish food works almost as well. I wouldn't cycle with fish food as it doesn't work just aswell, it's an unmearable level of ammonia that is produced so it could be either too high or too low. You can buy household ammonia for around £3 from places such as boots and homebase. Just go to the 'household cleaning' sections and have a look around. Just be careful not to get one that has any additives like perfumes etc.

Oh and Im not actually using the tank for goldfish, no there's no need to worry. Good good, I was just making sure. You can't blame people (if they're new to fishkeeping) for thinking a 'goldfish bowl' can have goldfish in it. I mean hell...why would it be called a 'goldfish bowl/tank' if it wasn't ok for goldfish... Don't you just hate manufacturers sometimes! Hehe. What is the plan for the tank then? (only asking out of interest)

See above for answers ^^
