Hey all,

I just purchased a Marineland C-220 (I have read they're the same a Tetra Tec) for my 40 gallon tank. The filter on the tank (Aqua Clear 70) has been running now for a few years, but I fear it might be on its last leg and its getting pretty loud.

Long story short, I decided to invest in the canister filter and have just washed it out and hooked it up and is now running (quietly!). I have both the Aquaclear and the Marineland running to get the bacteria colony esablished. Is this logic correct? I do not want my tank to start to go through a cycle process and hurt/kill my fish.

My thinking is that there shouldn't be a "cycle" because there is bacteria in the main filter (Aquaclear) is handling all of the load.... right?

If I keep running, I'm guessing the new filter will be cycled in about a month (same as a "fish-in cycle") at which point I can turn off or rehome the aquaclear. Assuming all my thoughts are correct, can I speed the process up? Or is this the best way to go about establishing my new filter?

Thanks,
Crazy

Hey Crazybob, my plan is exactly the same, except I plan to take all the media out of my AC's and stuff it in the canister. That way there is no need to run both because the seeded media is still filtering the tank, except it's in the canister now. The filter changed but the bacteria stayed the same.

By the way, cheers from Rochester! Big win for the Bills last night if you're a fan!! About time

Thanks,

i was running both in parallel, i took out the ceramic pieces and put them in the new filter though,

another member on here also said its more efficient to move all the media over and run one, as otherwise some of the bacteria will be lost when removing the old filter later on anyway. So I'll be moving the rest of my media over to the new filter, haven't had the time yet!

Cool thanks guys, didn't think to move the media right to the canister. Go bills indeed! I'm glad we were able to pull that one off. I was fairly nervous most of the game lol.

AC filters last forever, i have many that are over 20 years old, all you need to do is remove the motor, take the impeller out, clean the impeller, and clean the inside of the motor, a 10 min job, it will run quiet just like new
