Having run a internal filters since I have had my aquarium. First the original Juwel system which came with the RIO 125 then exchanging to a Fluval internal filter after the Juwel powehead quit on me.

After around a year of having the Fluval internal filter stuck in tank looking rather ugly as it didn't fit in the juwel filter case I made the decision today that I would make the leap to an external canister - I've been wanting one for ages now! I decided to go for the Aqua One Advanced 750.

It was a breeze to set up (only one hiccup and that was that I connected the outlet to the inlet and vise versa wondering why I couldn't pump water into the canister) after I realized my mistake it took seconds to start!

With the external canister in place and running I disconnected the fluval filter and my new filter was running like a dream - so much quieter and looks so much nicer with no filter sat inside of the tank. After about an hour or so of the filter running I could already see the difference in the water as it was looking so much cleaner.

And then I though! Should I perhaps have kept the Fulval filter running for a day or so until the bacterial colonies grow inside the canister? or should there be sufficient bacteria in the water and gravel?

If you are already heavily planted then I wouldn't worry too much and just do a water change daily for a few days. If not heavily planted and you already have your fish in there then do heavy water changes for a week or so.

If you are worried then you should've removed the media from the internal and put it into the cannister. Too late now as the bacteria will have died.

Its always to be better safe than sorry. You could put media from the internal filter into the canister filter to help with colonizing. How long has the internal filter been out of the tank? The beneficial bacteria could die if left out too long. Most likely you rtank will be fine though, you may notice some brown algae if you go through a mini cycle.

Yeah it's kind of too late now to put the old filter medium in the canister as it's been out now for several hours :S I never thought about it until later as I was all excited about this new canister filter.

I have recently added plants to my aquarium - but to be on the safe side I'll do some mini water changes for the next few days.
