whats the best way to treat bog wood before putting it in a tank ? im buying a small bit of it today from pets at home

dont want the water to stain if i can help it

Soak it in a bucket of hot water, changing the water regularly, for a week or so. It can be done in a day or it could take a few months. It all depends on the bit of wood and there is no way of telling before pourchase unfortunately.

I am still soaking mine and it has been a month and my wood in my shrimp tank I soaked for a month and it still leached tannins for a further 2.

Time is the only way on this one.

People will tell you to use different things in your filter to stop it. I have found none of the methods have worked for me.

if you've got a big plastic container or bucket, then just soak it in there for a few days to see if any tannins (the stuff the stains the water) leeches out. If it doesn't, then it's good to go....if it does, then it may leech for weeks/months. So either you wait for it to stop, or you just pop it in the tank have have a tan coloured water. Some people actually like the effect because it gives the aquarium a more natural appearance.

Why dont you just go on ebay - you can buy used pre-used bogwood on there which wont stain your water. You can even buy them with live plants growing on them :good:

If it's only a small bit (that will fit into a 15 ltr bucket) it will probably only take 3-4 days before it's clear (that's what happened with me a few weeks ago I just soaked in cold water and changed the water twice daily).

Cunning advice from a similar thread: put the bogwood in the toilet cistern, every time you flush it will take some tannins away until it is clear!
