Hello, I'm a new member here, and after years I have gotten fish again! I currently have Oliver the veiltail betta :hyper: . He's in my dorm in a 5gal filtered and heated Eclipse tank (Temp hovers around 78 degrees F) along with two Cory Catfish, Gesso the albino and Zinc the peppered cory. He is periwinkle with a dark red wash under his light, but I believe he is actually a royal blue with red wash judging by the photos with flash. He's got a great personality- loves to watch you and flares up at some random stuff when you hold them in front of his tank, like raisins. He's not for breeding purposes, just a little college companion. Now for the pictures!

(Also wanted to add that the Petsmart I bought him from was AMAZING. The cups the Bettas were in were large, clean, and they had not just Veiltails, but Crowntails, and females. I was shocked. Though there were more "rare" colors (a gorgeous orange with white tip veil tail and some flashy crowntails, this guy charmed me with his personality, following me around in his cup. :3 It was so adorable!)

Oliver as he is seen under his life- periwinkle and red.

Clearest picture I have of him.

He's beautiful and sounds like you're taking great care of him! I can't decide whether I'm looking forward to uni or not. I'm looking forward to the learning but not to the forking out for self storage to have somewhere to keep my fishies! You're lucky you can have him in your dorm.

he's awesome :good:. Glad to see you are giving him a proper home. I wish i would have had a betta when i was in the dorms. Would have made it much less depressing  (I'm only kidding, dorms are a good time).

Looks like the VT version of my guy Dodger:

Thanks! He's quite a charmer in his nice big tank- loves us ladies in the dorm and watches us do homework. Wow, Oliver could pass for Dodger's long lost brother! ;)

haha they are inquisitive little guys. Unfortunately Dodger was never much of a "charmer".... he's more of a lazy bum/independent type. Likes to hide in the back of his tank on the tall plants all day. Hardly even moves except when i tempt him with food . Probably the only betta that i've had that doesn't 'beg'.

Thanks so much. I'm sure he enjoys all the room the 5gal gives him- too many people I know keep Bettas in improper homes, then wonder why they only live around 6 months. Yeah, dorm room rules state any pets should be able to remain submerged for 30 minutes and not die. So basically it limits you to fish and aquatic frogs, really. College is amazing, I love it here (I attend MICA, a major art college in Baltimore, MD)

At first Ollie was really really withdrawn and shy when he first came here and had no appetite from the huge change he went through. Now he rules the roost and keeps the catfish in their place.

He is a very pretty guy. Blue is one of my favorite colors for a Betta. My male is also blue with red, but he's a crown tail, and he's got a turquoise glimmer when under a light.

Sucks that people don't read up on these fish before getting them.... They were a replaceable decoration for a lot of people living in my hall :/

Lol with those rules I would have taught my dog to hold his breath . He's already got the 'head under water' part down... lol. A dorm dog would be all too awesome.

What are you going to school for if you don't mind me asking (as in specifically)? I'm a Junior Business major at Coloado State University... but I used to do quite a bit of artwork and graphic design.

 Dodger will come out to have a flare fest at the cats in his tank every once in a while. They seem to just ignore him now.

Handsome guy you got there! And I'm in college too and looking for a new fish or fishes...unfortunately, my beloved female Betta passed away a couple of days ago along with my two Cories :-( (I'm pretty sure due to an illness/disease). But anyways, on a more cheerful note: welcome to the forum! :D

Yeah... a friend of mine got a Molly, Guppy, and aquatic frog for her dorm. One of my other friends (her roommate) changed the water and didn't put dechlorinator in... I had to run up and help them and give them dechlorinator and re-do the whole tank... the fish are ok right now, but I suspect the Molly may die, she's been acting weird.

I'm going to school for a major in GFA (general fine arts, basically a little of everything ;)) and probably a minor in illustration or graphic design.

Awww, the cat-flaring sounds adorable!
