Hey everyone! Newbie here. I just bought my first fish, a Betta, never owned a fish before. Put new water in the bowl, gravel on the bottom, water conditioning tablet, then when the tablet was dissolved put my fish in. The water is now a very powerful turquoise...is this normal?

Blue water is not normal, so you probably want to find what's causing it.

What color is the gravel? And did you rinse it before you put it in the bowl? If not it could be dust from the gravel and will be removed by a water change.

Also, if the bowl is small enough and the betta is blue, it could be the color of the betta reflecting in the water (but I wouldn't imagine that would make it a "powerful" turquoise!).

The tablet was white, the water was clear, the gravel is brown, I didn't rinse it :p and it's a different shade of blue than my fish :( Could it be the conditioner tablet? One thing I thought was weird was the directions said to dissolve one tablet in a 3 gallon tank or something like that, but the lady at the store said i could drop one tablet in.

what size tank/bowl? is it filtered or heated? it should be. it could be a number of things thats causing the blue water, try compleating a heavy water change (using a conditioning tablet) and see what happens

sounds like one of those anti-fungal/anti-parasite tablets... they turn the water blue...

0.o... get conditioner drops, read the lable carefully... see if u can return the tablets...

really weird!

The water conditioner tablets I use turn the water blue. They are one tablet per 10 gallons and the bluish tint quickly dissipates.

Yeah the guy at Petco told me that it was probably too much conditioning tablet for a 1/2 gallon bowl. He told me to keep changing the water and it would clear up.

BTW, I think my fish is happy, water's clear, he's making bubbles, swimming around....I bought a mini heater for his bowl, because the first morning the water got cold (my apt is cold) and he was kind of still near the bottom of the bowl. :( Now he's warm. But, he doesn't like the pellets, he'll eat them and spit them out, or just ignore them. Then I got bloodworms, and he loves those...but is it healthy just to feed him bloodworms? Or should I keep trying the pellets?

good to hear that he is ok...

it is better for the betta to have a varied diet - aka not just eating the same thing. keep trying with the pellets. mix them up a bit...
