My boyfriend felt very bad about my female beta killing my two guppies, so he surprised me with a red-tailed shark named Bruce. When he first put his in, the female beta (Dory) started nipping at his tail and chasing him around. She is still doing it, but sometimes she'll get right up next to him and not even care. I am very worried that Bruce might be her next victim and wanted somebody's advice.

I doubt a female betta is going to kill a RTBS
What is more likely to happen, as Bruce gets bigger, he will chase your betta round and terrify her! Mine did, I had to get rid of the shark.

I think it's more likely that she will fall victim to him. Red tailed sharks get really nasty as they get bigger! If he's still a little guy, you might be okay for a while but eventually he will have to go.

Unless she's actually tearing him up badly, don't worry too much about him. I've never seen a female betta really terrorize anything other than a male guppy or a tiny, tiny fish.

Dory has stopped chasing Bruce around :) I need to get them another hiding spot though because they always want to go in there at the same time and they go round and round it. the people at my LFS said before he bought it that if he does get to be a problem to her when he is bigger, they will have no problem taking him back and giving me another smaller one. This LFS over here is really good and knowledgable :) They called the other place idiots for telling me guppies will get along with my betta

cant say this without being blunt and no offense to you but this LFS you got the shark from are even more idiots for suggesting him as a good tank mate, then placing it when it gets bigger, a fish is meant to join the environment and stay there until it dies not b/c your b/f may think its a manly thing to have in the tank, say good bye to your betta as she'll come to a sticky end with any red tailed shark. I think you LFS saw you both coming and saw an easy sale.

He didn't get it to make my tank "manly"...if thats possible. So leave him out of this. He's always wanted a tankamte for the betta and hey...its not that big of a deal if i have to get a new tank for the shark when he gets bigger.

if i recall you were the one who brought your b/f into it, and i stated no offense meant but hey a new tank would be a good idea though.
