I put a crown tail betta in a 2 gallon aquarium yesterday and he is just hiding behind the filter. Is this a sign of a problem or is he just wanting to feel safe? My other bettas are more active than he is. I put 2 ghost shrimp in with him and he ate them. Are they a good diet for him? I was thinking I would put 6ish in with him and he could eat them as he wanted and they could clean until then and I would replace them as he ate them.

I'm not sure flake wouldn't be a better idea, both from a nutritional and economic point of view.

I do not care about economical (it would only be 6-7$ a month tops for shrimp) but I am very worried about nutritional. Any other opinions?

Yep... read the bit at the top about 'Trolling'.

Terry,

You're asking is it ok to add fish for your Betta purely for diet reasons!? The 2 shrimp you put in have gone and you're wondering if you should put more in!?
Either try harder or buy some flake and/or pellets. I'd buy the pellets.

Terry.

Try harder at what? What is wrong with a ghost shrimp diet? They help clean the tank and it is more natural than processed flakes. I have noticed fish seem to prefer "the humt" vs just being fed. But if flakes/pellets are better for him I am fine with feeding him them. Thats all I was asking.... But about his behavior is it natural?

A fish in a 2 gallon tank? That's not even 10 litres! You cannot keep a fish in there long term, whether or not they live in small environments in the wild. Regarding the fish hiding behind the filter, is the current too strong? Bettas prefer stiller water currents.

8 litres, give or take half a litre, is far too small to be a stable home for fish or shrimp really. It'll take a lot of work to find a perfect balance for a tank as small as that

EDIT: I suppose feeder fish/crustaceans might draw out more natural behaviour in fish. I can understand that although a more natural way to feed your fish is to actually allow the hunted to have a chance to escape. Otherwise, you're putting unneeded stress on the prey stock that you add. I can appreciate both views.

Feeding your Betta purely on ghost shrimp will surely 'back him up' and he'll become somewhat constipated which can lead to lethargy and swim bladder issues amongst other things. Feeding him a diet with both protein, fibres and essential minerals will bring out the best in him.

Thank you very much. I think u just solved my problem. The filter probably is to strong for his liking. I will weaken it or get a different one.

So exactly what do you reccommend for his diet? A mixture? All pellets/flakes?

No prob, other members might have some more info for you.
Please look into a larger tank (5 gallons/about 25 litres or more, ideally) for your fish, though. :good: It's kinder long term.

I am going to get a 10 gallon soon. (I have an extra filter so it wont cost but 12$) A 5 gallon cost as much as a 10 gallon lol
