i got a jaguar cichlid the other day, the LFS was just shutting and their till was off so they let me have him for free:p ( RRP:£5 or so)
hes fitted straight into my tank lovely and as he grows will be housed in a larger tank and i was just wondering if anyone else here owns one and how i should expect mine to be?
regards tuurlijk

I kept one of these for about 4 years before passing it on. It lived in a 200 gallon community with a red devil and some convicts and firemouths, and latterly a garpike and a channel catfish. I found it to be a lovely fish, not at all disruptive, and had no problems with aggression. It was clearly not at the top of the heap (that was the red devil) but otherwise it seemed to be happy.

Quite outgoing, though not to the same degree as the red devil. This tank was a display aquarium in the foyer of the zoology department where I was doing my degree, and the cichlids quickly settled in, swimming to the front of the tank to watch people sitting on the chairs and sofas dotted about. The red devil would "attack" fingers pressed against the glass, but the jaguar mostly swam at the front and observed.

Fed mine on cichlid pellets, strips of squid and mackerel, and various other bits and pieces of that sort.

Cheers,

Neale

the two that I have are not overly agressive but they are also both female. when your fish gets to be about 4-6 inches it will become very clear as to the sex. both mine regularly lay eggs on a rock that I have provided them. and they like any food I throw into them except scallops they don't like them.

mines got quiet a personality :p hes only little though!
when he gets larger how will i be able to tell the sex?
is it the same as most cichlids the fins extend etc?
as it is a nandopsis ( like the dempsey etc )
i know things are slightley different so what should i look for?
regards tuurlijk

takk for hjelpen

Females will get VERY fat and are less colorful than the males. Either use google or post a pictures in about 1 months time Lol.

Might even be able to tell now if you get a decent picture.

my jag was viscious and i had to give him back to the LFS. He was in a 60 gallon with a GT (they were bout about 1") and picked on the GT too much so i took the "uglier" one back  all a matter of opinion though! and i'm a firm believer in although the species as a whole is tame or aggressive, the temperament of the fish is more important. So your jag could be a nice fish that will live with other fish!

just thought i'd give you the other end of the spectrum

good luck!

finaly got my cam working!
its not a great image.... but, here he is :D

what you think ?

100% Male :good:

Just saying that the hujuti (sp) gar in the background might become a target sooner or later. I had a 9inch fella that sadley got hammered by 8inch jag at feeding time ... Not a nice site

ok thanks! hes going in a bigger tank when he grows anyway :p
ive had that gar for ages, since he was 2" :) nice fish, never bothers anyone or gets bothered.
anyone can think of a good name for my jag?

I named mine Jackie. She had to move back to the store I bought her from, unfortunatly. I was told "average cichlid aggression" when I bought her a year ago but that is far from true. She kills anything that shares tank space with her, except for an armored sort of pleco. She is sneaky too, only killing at night. She was aggressive since I got her, but after laying her first batch of eggs at about 5 inches, her personality shifted to murderous. She stopped eating any kind of food I gave her because she prefers to kill her food. I think you can possibly keep jags with tank mates such as red devils, wolf cichlid, flowerhorn, etc, but you need to have HUGE tanks. They require a lot of space for their territory. She would even attack me when I cleaned her tank. Be prepared to give your male at least 125 gallons to himself as he will reach 16 inches. I have heard males are even more aggressive than females.

yeah ive read up on jags, if all fails i will have to re home him, but i thought i would try a plan...

get a small one and grow him with lots of other fish, so he wil lbe used to tanks full of other fish,
when he gets abit bigger hes going in with a red devil. a frontosa. and a pair of BIG bloodparrots that not only try to kill me through the glass, but draw blood when they bite me :(
so hopefully all will be ok.

jtnova13 how are our fish differnt then? could you maybe post a picture?
regards tuurlijk

I have kept 3 jags 2 females and 1 male. I have NEVER found them to be over aggressive and have got along with all the cichlids I have kept.

They are however very good at killing things if they do lash out which they do from time to time, expect a very beaten up fish.

I would class this fish to be slightly aggressive since more often then not it only attacks when is challenged by another fish.
