Hi All,

Had left my fish for a couple of days as was away from home - came back to find that my Mollie has had 5 babies. This was to my astonishment as thought I had asked the person at the fish store for a male Mollie.

My tank at the moment has 4 Platies 1 mollie( + 5 baby Mollies) 5 Neon tetra and one Beta(Male)

Im obviously gonna do a lot more reading about how to look after the baby mollies - but do you think its best to get special nets so that the baby mollies will not get eaten. At the moment none of the above fish seem interested in the mollies so maybe the nets are not needed?

Also do Mollies breed with other types of fish such as the Platies or will the reason more likely be that she was already pregnant when i bought her?

My tank has a capacity of 35 gallons so at the moment I think im okay, but maybe will look at moving the female mollies to another person tank as dont want to go over my capacity of fish

Many Thanks for any answers given and will obvously reasearch more myself

keeping the babies in there will be fine and wont go over the limit. also the mollie is probily a male and has crossed with the platies or the mollie is a female and one of the platies is a male.

The mollies are quite capable of retaining viable sperm packets for 6 months or more. A single molly in a tank often will have several drops of fry before using up the available sperm packets. Contrary to what Azzaknight said, a molly cannot breed successfully with a platy so that is not the source of your fry. If you have adequate cover and the fry are doing OK where they are, I would be hesitant to remove them to another tank or a breeder.

Hi all - Cheers for your advice

Yes I was meaning removing the female fish when they get older so they dont interbreed with each other as firstly I dont think I want many more as wont want too overstock and also heard that breeding brother and sister is obviously not good as can cause genetic problems with their new births.

Does anyone know when Black Mollies can start reproducing?

The fry will be old enough to breed when you are able to tell which ones are males. The time depends to a great deal on the temperature where they are kept. At higher temperatures they mature much faster and grow faster. At lower temperatures they do not grow as fast but they also don't die as young.
