Hey Y'all,

My father has just bought me some new additions for my topical tank and I'm a bit worried the new ones will nip the fins of my old ones, my original set up was 60L tank with elite stingray 15 filtration system and 1 guppy, 1 black molly, 2 baby platys (from previous platys which gave birth), now i have also got 2 small angelfish, 2 rainbow sharks, 2 bala sharks, 1 plec and 1 male betta, i have put the betta in my 30L biorb as i know it will attack my guppy but i don't know about the rest.

i would really appreciate your advice

Thank you :)

Your tank is too small for that many sharks... Balas grow up to 14 inches... See the Bala in my signature? My tank is twice the size of yours, and he's too big for it, really. Imagine two that size in your tank.
The rainbows will most likely fight with each other and the balas as they grow; they don't do well in groups. You should really return all of the sharks.

What sort of Plec is it? A common will probably be too big for your tank as well; if it's a Bristlenose you'll be ok :)

Oh boy, the new additions will be a problem for you. Angelfish (gets big and territorial), both types of sharks(get big and aggressive) and possibly the pleco(depending on what type it is, can get huge) plus the betta(may nip the guppy, as you stated). Take them all back IMO, find out what type of pleco he is, you may have to take him back too. A 60L tank is going to limit the types of fish you can have. Stick with fish that don't get more than 2 inches big.

Good luck, sorry to give the bad news

HOLEY MOLEY!! I would give your dad a severe talking to! And the LFS! Your rainbow sharks will fight until there is a winner and the other one probably dead. The Bala's need to be in a shoal ideally and can grow 15"+ Your Angels will need a tank that is at least 18" high and probably 3-4ft long. The Betta will be very happy though! :good:

If you keep these fish then at least rehome one of the Rainbow Sharks. The Plec will need to be identified as if it is a common or a Gibbiceps then you are looking at a 2ft fish potentially. If you do want the keep them then i would suggest a 5ft tank minimum.

thanks to all who replied its been a great help :) i will call my LFS and see if they will take them back, the plec is a common, its still really small at the moment, i have been thinking about getting a Juwel Trigon 350 aquarium, would this be big enough for the rest of them?

If you take the Plec, 1 Rainbow Shark and the 2 Bala Sharks back then that would be very suitable.

thank you for your reply, how big would a tank need to be if i wanted to keep the plec? all 4 sharks have been returned now but i really do want to keep the plec

:)

ideally 4 foot (240L) until its as big as your hand then 6 foot

There are lots of plecs out there that suit smaller tanks and only grow 4 inches or so.

check out the pleco forum here and ask, lots of info there to be read before hand.

Very sound advice! I would have kept one of the Rainbow Sharks personally, especially if upgrading to the Trigon. I had one once and he was a very beautiful fish. Wish i had never sold him! :(
