Well I figured it was time for an upgrade. Saw a nice 5" x 2" x 18" tank on e.bay... Bid and won it. But I will admit I was a little shocked at how huge it is when I got it home yesterday  :hyper: . My room is 16' x 12' and it kinda takes over it  .. I wanted it to say TANK..when you walked in the room... not cream at the top of its voice TANK...
Well as you can see from my sig I don't have that many fish to put in it. I want a community tank to include my other fish and was wondering what best would go in there? I have always stuck to the smaller fish and this now gives me a new angle to go at with pretty much anything goes on the fish front

All suggestions gratefully received, I will post some pics tomorrow to give a better idea of the set up.

Ok, I don't know much about livebearers...

7 Glow Light Tetra
3 Neon Tetra
2 Cory Catfish
1 Cory Peppered catfish
1 Red Nosed Honey Gourami
2 Guppies
3 Platies

If the cory in your siggy is one of the 2 Cory Catfish you have listed, it looks like a trilineatus (3-lined cory) for what that's worth!

Here's what I'd do, incorporating what you have:
15 Glow Light Tetras
15 Cory cats - including the 3 you have. Try to get at least 3 of a kind and build the group.
1 Gourami
2 Guppies
3 Platies
Loaches. Depending on what kind you get, you could get a few or many. There is the clown loach, but they get big. Other loaches stay smaller and you could get more. Get at least 3.
Another school of smaller fish - 15 or so.
Rainbowfish - Get 6-7 all of the same kind and you will have quite a show. Boesemanis are beautiful, but it's hard to find females b/c the males are so much "prettier". Turquoise rainbows are really nice.

How's that for a start?

Definitely go with more cories. How about getting at least six each of two different types - I've heard that if you do this they'll each stick to their own species and that the shoals can swim "through" each other and emerge the same...if you know what i mean...dunno if i explained that properly

If it was my tank I'd have some glass cats too.....and/or some upside down cats. glasss cats are stunning but I hear they're abit delicate  might be worth a try though!

Well that sounds really great :) ...but 15 cory's :dunno: ..lol.. god I love these little guys...but 15?...really? I got 3 types so far... 3 stripe pepered and one thats similar to the 3 stripe but has spots instead (hense spot and stripe :p) So should I stick with these 3 types? There are so many.. I saw some gorgeous skunk corys the other day...they looked really great, or am I pushing my luck with too many types?

I'll deffinatley go with the 2 large shoals... 1 tetras..will add more neons...and was thinking danios for the other?...any good?

Plec........... hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm Was really wanting to stick with the smaller types really... but i'll have a look and see what they have.

How about otto's?..they look really cute and would break up the cory infestation..lol.. but I hear they are very sensertive little fish?

And hubby wants one or two angels  ... i hear they can be aggressive?..and is one or a pair better to cut down on the bad tempered situation?

Sorry....so many questions  :nerd: :fish: .. but this big thing is new to me and I don't want any carnage in my tank with buying the wrong fish  .. so all help is really appreciated guys.. thanks

Heya
If it was me I would have six each of four different types but then I *am* totally obsessed with cories, so ignore me  are you sure the one in your sig is a trilineatus? I didnt think they had that patch on their eye...

You get relatively small plecs, eg the Butterfly plec (L052 or L168) which only gets to about 4". Bristlenoses reach about the same i think, and are good algae eaters. :)

I think angels would be a bad idea with your neons because neons are the natural diet of angels! I heard there's a chance if you got a small angel and "brought it up" with neons it might regard them as "friends" but you might not wanna take that risk

Hi,

I have found that with angels its best to get something thats not "slim in body" if you don't want it to be eaten. I've got a juvie angel in with Dwarf Gourami and Black Mollies, They all get on really well and it makes for a great combo. I tried raising the Angel with smaller fish (Tetra/Dwarf Puffer types) and Im afraid they didnt last a week before mysteriously dissapearing when the light went off at night!

Which is a shame cuz angels are by far my fav fish and They look truly beautiful when idling around with a shoals of fish surrounding them,

HTH

Congrats on your new tank!! I can't wait to get mine (planning the same size as yours) :) I am also planning to stick with a variety of smaller fish, rather than a small number of large fish.

I plan more Boeseman Rainbow for my new bigger tank (I have three already and they are beautiful) They are still juvenile at the moment, so the males are only just starting to develop their blue (usually very dark stripes in the evening) I plan to try my luck with Glass Cats, since I have other sensitive fish that are thriving in my water (Cardinals and Rams). I also intend to increase my number of Bentosi White Tip Tetras, they are beautiful (similar to Rosy Tetra, but actually more red in the body, and almost transparent). How about a school of Bala shark? Or Silver Dollars, or Congo Tetras? A school of five Clown Loach would be fun too! :D

Oh! and the Cory in your signature is a Surinam Cory (Corydoras surinamensis)

Have fun! :)

Thanks guys...some great advice there. And thanks for the info on the angels...that could have been quite a meal as I was offered an 8" one the other day...

I did think about Discus and other larger fish.. I saw some fantastic Discus in the LFS the other day...they were 10" round  ..lol I never new they got that big..swimming dinner plates :fun: .. but it looked unfair to see them in a 5ft tank with what seeemed not a lot of room to move, so that idea went out of the window. :(

Well I'm off to the LFS tomorrow :hyper: .. and I'm getting...

7 neons..to make up the shoal..
10 zebra danios...for my second shaol.
An assortment of corys :shifty: .. I'll see what he has in...maybe another 6
2 otos if he has any.. .

From the bigger LFS
Also on the shopping list..will be a plec of some description...(thanks for the info on the small varietys)
Some rainbow whatever you called them..lol I'll have a look and see what they are like. Also the congo tetras they sound great
Also I may have a look at getting a pair of kissing gouramis... but knowing what cheeky monsters they can be I may decide against that.

Can't wait..its just like Christmas when I was about 10
:santa: How sad is that :kana:  :p

Uhm.. don't you mean 5'x2'x18' (feet) as opposed to inches? I doubt a tank that size could support even a guppy. :p If it is feet, then WOW. That must be a big tank. Congratulations.
