Looks really good Scott. Definately needs a black background though.
A trio of Apistogramma would work well, as would a trio of Nannacara Annomala. The Laetacara Dorsigera already mentioned would br great too. Nothing stopping you getting a pair of Apisto's and a pair of Nannacara/Laetacara. A group of Bolivian Rams or Keyholes would be an excellent choice too.
As for shoalers, Lemon Tetra's are great. Mine stick together really well and don't detract from the main fish of the tank.
