Hi there,
i have my 3ft tank up and running (with out the fish) and i have already got 2 other tanks set up
one with 1 oplain gourami(male)
and the other tank has 1 pearl gourami(male) and 4 penguin tetras (all ready to be moved to the new tank).

i had the two gouramis in the same tank before i got the big one but it seemed the oplain one was bullying the pearl but i thought
it might have just been because the tank was quite small.

my question is if i put them all in to the new 3ft(50 gallons i think) tank will the two male gouramis fight?

kind regards

Hiya,

I also have two in the same tank, an opaline and a moonlight

The moonlight was first in the tank, the moment the opaline went in the moonlight didn't exactly bully but did nudge the opaline a bit

But after several days the opaline became the more dominant fish

Now occasionally the opaline will chase the moonlight, never more than that though, it usually ends up with them both going up for air at the same time then swimming around together lol

They have other tank mates, the tank's 150 imp gallon filled with around 135 imp gallon of usable water mass

So i guess even though mine have pretty much a lot of water to get lost in they still have a go now n again

This said, a larger tank should ease the problem somewhat, you could always add the opaline sometime after the pearl as that may calm the opaline down for a bit (a bit, but i'd say it will re-dominate shortly afterwards)

I also have two pearls in that tank, they are fine with each other and the larger two gourami's leave them be :)

All's you can do is try in your larger tank and hope it helps, also plenty of hiding places would help, even though these are labrynth fish they still like hidey holes

thanks for the reply :D

yea i think i will give it a go in a few days when the tank is sorted with plants and plenty places to hide.
if they dont get along after a while then i'll pop the oplain back into his usual tank.

another quick question..
once the tank has the plants ect.. i'll be putting my 4 penguin tetras and the 2 gouramis in to the tank,
can i get more fish to put in with them and what kind would you recomend?

thanks again

Welcome to the forum Nic.
I would recommend that you first determine that the new tank's filter is capable of handling your fish load. If you move the one that has been taking care of the 5 fish, it may be mature enough to also handle the extra gourami. Try testing your water a day or two after combining the tanks and see how things are working with ammonia and nitrite readings. If both are at zero, you may well be able to start moving the stocking levels a bit higher. A 50 gallon tank will easily hold more fish if you have the filter properly developed first. The real limitation is likely to become the willingness you have to do water changes. At some point, you could have so many fish in the tank it would take a 30% water change every other day to remove all the nitrates. I like to run my tanks at a much lower stock level so that nitrates don't get out of hand that fast.
