I'm setting up my 30 gallon tank. These are the fish I have been thinking of getting:
3 female platy
8 neon tetra
6 rummy nose tetra
3 cory catfish
and maybe 3 oto catfish once I get some algea for them to feed on.
Is this an ok amount of fish or too much. My biggest concern is an overcrowded tank, if I had to get rid of any it would be the rummy nose because some of the platys and neons are being moved from a 10 to the 30. Thanks!

make it 6+ corys, will be happier and will behave more naturally, other than that stocking sounds good :good:

wow, it's KFC versus Chick Filet!

Agree that corys just get happier the bigger the party. You'd probably be starting to be a bit overstocked technically, but not all that much if you have good weekly water change habits and are regular about your filter maintenance.

Have you had the female platies long enough to know you're not going to have a lot of fry coming? Fry can create more bioload that one expects sometimes, as they have just high metabolisms. Perhaps there's a way the 10G could still be the livebearer tank?

No, I shouldn't have any fry. It's an adult female I have had for 5 months now and she gave birth to fry a month or two after purchase and the two other platys are her offspring so I shouldn't have that problem. Also on the filter I own it has a red marker that when filled up indicates to rechange the filter bag. I never trust it and change it earlier but how often should I change it. Thanks.

Many TFF hobbyists pride themselves in using media for decades without changing it, it's even one of the reasons ceramic rings and gravel got invented, so you could just use them for a lifetime and never disturb your hard-won bacterial colonies.

Of course, media -can- eventually get worn out. Sponges eventually begin to tear, after some years and you have to decide to get a new spong, use scissors on both the old and new sponge and replace maybe one third at a time with a month in-between, perhaps. Small bits of loose media can be replaced with new bits, ideally just a tiny fraction of the amount of media in that tray or bag.

The changing of entire units of media is an invention of a sales manager somewhere and is a primary reason for beginners losing all their bacteria and then their fish!

i think that ur have a perfect amount of fish for your tank. i recently just restarded with a new group of fish after my oscar died of a
diseease called "ich". i was not carful. and i suggest 4 catfish for an extra job cleaning

I was thinking about putting 4 african dwarf frogs in the 10 gallon. Is that a good amount?

i wouldn't put 4 but 3 is a perfect amount. because u dont wanna over crowed your tank because u have to think about when they grow to there full sizes they will take up more room

Get 6 Ottos as they like to be in big groups. they may even shoal with your tetras odlly enough.

what about a dwarf gourami and 3 kuhli loaches. not sure if the loaches would be happy in a 10 gallon. Just brainstorming ideas for this tank.
