I got a new 20 gallon tank for my office at work (12"x24" long x 16 tall"). Using filter media from another tank, I put 6 of my 0.75 inch platy fry in it.
When I am sure the amonia, nitrite, nitrate levels are stable for a week or two, I plan to re-organize some of my crowded tanks at home, and bring a few more fish to work. I am thinking of adding my 7 neon tetras to my 20 gallon work tank.
I've already donated a dozen platy fry to my LFS, and plan to do that again - can't keep all those platy fry. My 20 gallon tank has a Whisper 30 filter hanging on the back of it (rated for up to 30 gallons), and would be getting a 20% water change weekly.
Anyway, now that I've hopefully made enough disclaimers about cycling, overcrowding, maintenance, etc to not get flamed - I would like to eventually get either a couple shrimp of some kind, or a smaller variety of pleco, like a Pitbull or Rubbernose pleco. This is just long term planning, not something I am going to get this month. I know plecos are not needed to control algae, but I just like them. I also like what I've read about bristlenose plecos, but I am afraid my 20 gallon tank might be too small for one of them.
So, opinions wanted on:
Should I add something to a 20 gallon tank with 6 platys and 7 neons?
If you think it would be OK, what kind of pleco or shrimp would you recommend?
