Ok so I have my self a 20 gallon and a 40 gallon.

Right now I am working on getting a list of a good set of fish to put in the 20 gallon (in my room)

I was thinking of the following:

2x otocinculus catfish

2x sparkling gourami

2x blue danio

1x swordtail

will that work?

Now I am comfortable with getting rid of the swordtail and putting in more of the gouramis or danios, assuming they will mingle fine.

Not sure how many TOTAL i should have in there, since ill need some hiding spots and vegetation.

Also feel free to post some ideas of a decent setup for the 40 gallon tank if you want to.

Well for starters for the 20 gallon.. I'd go with...

around.. 3 Guppies..2 females 1 males... or all males or all females..

mmm.. black neons? or how bout jsut some neons? (I'd rather have black neons....) about 6...

mmm.. how bout the otos.. around 4...

That's only around.. 22 inches.. 2 inches over you'd be fine... (I'm like 10 inches over.. LOL..)

Also, what type of plants should I be getting or does it really matter?

depends on your lighting... what kind of lighting do you have?

Don't get the Otos until an algae problem occurs... they can be really picky about accepting veggies and algae wafers.

1 male / 2 female is a good ratio for Gouramis...it helps prevent the male from overly harassing one female.
Danios are schooling fish, so I'd go with 6 of those

Or
Gourami's with a choice of:
- 4-5 Fancy Male Guppies and 4 smaller species of Corydoras (Panda, Aeneus, Adolfoi, etc)
- 6-8 small tetras like neons, cardinals, glow-lights and cherry shrimp
- 6 larger tetras (like x-ray, black skirts, etc) and an apple snail

There are other combinations I'm sure...a lot of it depends on how you feel about overstocking your tank.

As for plants, that kind of depends on what kind of lighting your tank has. Java moss, java fern, and anubias are easy low light plants. Hornwort/Foxtail requires a bit more light, but is good at sucking up extra nitrates.

was your suggestion of what to stock it with for the 20 gallon tank? That seems way too much IMO, but i could be wrong, its been a while, and I would think space requirements per fish is less if they are a schooling type of fish?

EDIT: nvm i saw that as "gouramis plus this and that and that and that" not as gouramis + this or this or this.. :) opps

everybody clap their hands for me!!!

Why you may ask?

because I was dumb and thought a 20gallon was a 40 gallon...

looks like I have a 10gal and a 20gal...

now to re-look up fish that are good for a 10 gallon

Should I be looking at say a school of 6 tetras or something for the 10 gallon? or is a 10gal too small for that?

hmm. Maybe come guppies, or tetras, or platys or a mixture of the three? If you can kepe up on the water changes and the water stats down it will not hurt you to be a little overstocked... But mind you lot's of members won't recommend it..

do you have any links to videos of them? I couldn't find anything too great on youtube so far, though I did read that they like to move their shells around to their liking?

(sounds cool)

If i were to get a pair of them for the 10 gallon, what else would I be able to put in there with them?

(I was thinking of a single fish, something to add variety to them, I'm not a huge fan of having a tank full of just one type of fish)

I found a nice journal in the african chiclid forums here :)

thanks for the link.

I just have a feeling the GF is going to want a fish thats a bit more colurful in the room :/
(and I dont want to make the 20 gal a single species tank either)

(maybe I'll get another 10gal for the computer room?? :)
