I have finished making my custom 2.5 gallon divided betta tank. It is divided in two parts and in the middle, instead of the poplular glass dividers, i used window screen mesh to have the same conditions in both tanks. I silicon glued it in and has cured nicely. I have a Red Sea nano filter (another reason for mesh) and have created a little contraption to have very little water movement from the returning water out of the filter. Will post pics soon!!!

Cant Wait to see pics, one thing I would recommend to get water flowing even better trough both halves is to put the intake on one side and the output on the other side of the divider. If you've already done this than great and if you havent it might be a nice idea.

I have that filter on one of my bettas tanks and on one of my killi parent tanks, you should put the intake on the left side and the outake on the right. I like the idea of screen, i probably wouldve never thought of that.

um, just checking, but is that a metal or a non-metal screen? if it's a metal, then you might want to reconsider using it as a divider. while not all metals corrode (rust) in water, most of them do slowly release particles just due to the ionic nature of water. thus, you can get a lot of undesirable metal contaminants which may or may not prove harmful to your fish.

It looks to me like the screen on our windows here at the house and they're the cloth like meshy material, Metal I agree would be a bad idea.

no, i made sure it wasn't metal. it's made of fiberglass...its a great material and sounds cool, LOL!

That is great that you were able to customize your tank like that. Hopefully, fiberglass will not be toxic either. I have only ever used LFS sold dividers to divide my betta tanks, so I'm curious to see how your setup does.

llj :)

Well, heres a pic of my filter contraption. Because bettas don't like too much water water flow, I added a piece of maluble plastic to the filter set-up. It spreads the returning water from the filter over its surface (and a bit of gravel helps too). You can see it in the pic. It first gets hung on to the rim of the tank and the filter goes over it.

I also added a shrimp to the left portion of the tank, I also have a dramatic story about a shrimp on the other side. I had one on the right side but a few minutes into its new life, my betta started attacking it!! Then, it jumped out of the tank and fell on my floor. I couldn't find it for a minute or so and presto! I found it! I gently grabbed its tail, it squirmed, then I placed it in my 5 gallon community tank. Peace at last!
