My female guppy has looked exactly the same during the 6 months I've known her: big black gravid spot, round belly, looks about 3-4 weeks into pregnancy I'd say. Permanently. During this time she has had two batches of fry to my knowledge, the last this summer (July-ish), but she never ever looks any different.

It is very annoying as I keep expecting things to happen and never know where I am.

Couldn't some of you clever people just have a word in her ear and explain that this is not very considerate? We like to know where we are.

Does anyone else have a similar problem?

P.S. There is no particular reason why she should absorb her fry, good water stats and no difficult tankmates; during the last week or so she may have had the attentions of her son but she is easily a match for him. I'd say she is pretty well queen of the tank. She is in good health as far as I can tell, eats like a pig, very active, beautiful fish. Just always fat.

I have exactly the same problem with one of my female guppies. I have guppies and platies in a heavily planted 25g. so I've nearly always got fry of some sort surviving from hiding in the plants, but only two of the 3 females ever slim down. The third one always looks like she's about to burst, but doesn't...

I am by far not an expert on guppies...not even close...I just got my first 3 last week...but while doing some research on feeder guppies I came across this information and then saw your thread..thought it might be of intrest..

Female guppies carry more than one litter. You can see the younger eggs still developing.

Gosh! That's an interesting picture. I'd never really thought about how this several-batches-from-one-mating lark actually works inside her body.

Some female guppys have a permanent gravid patch appearance which is actually natural coloring- i get this alot in my black tuxedo female guppys. I also find that many females will always be fatter/more pregnant looking after their first batch of fry- i suppose it is like the equivillant of some of us human females getting stretch marks or a saggy belly and boobs after having a baby  .

My 2 month old baby already has a quite clearly defined patch. But somehow my adult female just looks pregnant all the time. Probably like you say, stretchmarks. Well, she's not the only one in this house....
Her adult friend on the other hand looks non-pregnant, the spot is there but very faded and she is thin.
Oh well, shouldn't really complain; I've got enough babies to be getting on with; though it would have been nice with a few more guppies.

Aw, I could have sworn she was going to give birth last night. All heavy and square-looking, kept to herself in a corner, sank to the bottom, you could almost hear her groaning, heaved her tail...and...well, it wasn't babies she produced....

Boiled peas for breakfast this morning!
