Hey people,
I've just bought a tiger nerite snail of the internet a few hours ago for my planted nano tank, as there is a lot of algae in it. However, my planted tank has soft water and an acidic pH, so the snail will only be there until the worst of the algae has been consumed. He will also be moved if I notice anything at all wrong with him or the beginning of shell corrosion. I will be adding a calcium supplement to the tank while the snail is there, but I cant let the pH go over 7, as my rams wouldn't appreciate this. In 2-5 months, my rams will be moved into a bigger tank and I will raise the pH for the snail to go back in (I also have shrimp in the tank who would benefit from this).
Anyway, after he has sorted out all the algae and until I can move my rams, he will be going to a 2gal brackish tank (plastic tank). I'm going to buy some marine salt, calcium supplement and a hydrometer this Saturday at the lfs, but what SG do nerites do best in? The tank will have coral sand as a substrate, a hydor 7.5 watt heater and a small air powered sponge filter (or a small power filter if i get too much salt splashing everywhere).
This will be my first tank that I've used salt in (apart from brine shrimp, but somehow I don't think they are the same), so is there anything else I will need to know?
Oh, and do I need to use RO water for this brackish snail tank? My tap water has a pH of 7.4 and is soft (don't know exactly how soft though, as I don't have a test for this).
Thanks!
Edit: And speaking of tests, I take it I cannot use my freshwater master test kit in this tank, what can I use? Thanks again!
