I have 17 Neon tetra, 5 I have had for about 4 weeks, the other 12 were purchased on Saturday. The new tetras do not appear to be schooling together! is this because I have to many or will it take time for them to adjust to new surroundings?

i would`nt worry to mutch, they may only be a little shocked, give them a few more days and they should be fine, they are hardy fish so this might just be the case :good:

All fish need time to settle down. Smaller fish shoal mostly when alarmed. You may have done better to divide your new stock between adding harliquine and guppy as they are shoaling fish too.

Did you correctly acclimatize the new neons when they were added?

Have you done a water check, if so what are your Ammona/nitrIte/nitrAte readings?

Although Neons are quite hardy in a mtured balanced tank they are extremely sensitive in a new immature tank.

I have 17 cardinals and they also don't shoal together. They did at first and it is quite disappointing when they stop, but with just 4 pitbull plecs and 4 Otos for company they are just feeling more secure and have less need for the safety in numbers of schooling.

They now tend to stay in groups of 6-8 at a time and follow each other about.

In summary if your tank is mature then I'm sure it is just them feeling less scared.

If the tank is immature (and had an unknown problem) they would stay in a school together probably hiding somewhere.

Part of the problem could also be stress from high ammonia and/or nitrite. Adding that many fish at once can definitely cause a minicycle.
