Hi all.

I have a 250 litre tank with a range of tetras. About 70 in total. Have an internal filter that is about to be replaced with a tetratec ex1200 external.

The problem is over the past week i have been finding a dead fish here and a dead fish there. 8 now in total. At first i thought it was bad quality fish i had bougth from pets at home. (first and last!) But now 2 rummynose and a neon tetra have since prished and i have had these for 2 years.

I did a water check and everything is fine. ammonia 0, good nit 20, bad nit 0. (always forget nitrate nitrite!) Ph 7.8 (might b a bit high but this is my tap water ph nand have had no problem last 3 years.

I had a good look at the corpses and could see nothing unusual. But looking at my live fish today and i spotted a neon tetra with a bulging eye. It makes me wonder if this is related to the recent deaths?

So over to you experts. Any ideas whats going wrong? And if so what do i do to fix it?

I was thinking some kind of bacterial infection but im just stabbing in the dark

Cheers! :good:

You can only hope that either Collin_t or Big C reads this.... I have confidence in their advice.... Pe patient... You'll get your educated advice.

When you get your new external filter run it on the tank with the internal filter for at least a month. This will allow it a chance to develop the beneficial bacteria it needs to keep the water clean and will prevent the tank from cycling again. Once it has been running for at least a month, (with the other filter running as well) then you can remove the internal filter from the tank.

The tetra problem is probably a bacterial infection. Old fish are more prone to diseases and tetras don't live that long anyway. However because there have been a number of deaths recently I would do some water changes and gravel cleans and then treat the tank with a broad spectrum medication.
Waterlife Protozin should be fine and treats a lot of things but most medications for bacterial infections should also work.
If you have clown loaches in the tank then get Waterlife Myxazin instead of Protozin as it is safer for loaches and catfish.

Try to increase aeration or surface turbulence during treatment as medications lower the oxygen levels in the water.

Before you treat the tank do a 50% water change and gravel clean the tank. Clean the filter in a bucket of tank water too. This will reduce the amount of gunk in it and the medication will be more effective. (Make sure you use dechlorinated water that has a similar temperature & PH to the tank).

Remove any carbon from the filter before treating the tank as it will absorb the medication and the fish won't get better.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

Wow Colin.... I am impressed......You see Gowing, I always give sound advice.

Cheers for that. Very helpful indeed. I have just statred treating the tank with interpet anti internal bacteria treatment. Hopefully this will sort them out! Ill keep you informed!

Cheers again
