Hi

I noticed one of my neons has changed colour overnight and i'm worried it's got NTD. I hear they can change colour due to "mood", time of day, interactions with each other... not always indicative of disease. Is this true?

I've also read that the minute it looks to be ill then i should get it out of the aquarium and as the disease has no cure then it's best to euthanize it.

Plan of action required asap so any advice welcome please?

As you have been told, loss of colour is not always disease, but can also be stress. Do you have any water stats? Ammonia, nitrite and pH being most important nitrate also important.

Have you made any big changes to the tank? Any new tank mates? What is you stocking (fish tyoes and numbers)?

Loss of colour can be stress, internal bacteria, NTD, and many many more things. Any more symptoms?

All the best

Water stats would be good like a members has asked for.
Signs of ntd are.
White bleached out colour in the red regions or a milky colour in the red regions.
Yellowish colour in the blue region.
Black lining around the red on the tetra.
Lumps thats go to a point in the tummy region.
Leaving the shoal and being restless.
Swimming oddly..
Later stages bent spine, dropsy, popeye.

the lump where the stomach can also be a sign that the little fella is stuffed :)

Thanks guys.

The fish actually had a better colour in it when i got home from work so i'm assuming it was freaked out when i did a gravel vac. Its a noisy contraption so this may well have set the colour change off.

My levels are fine for nitrate and ammonia although i have not checked the Ph. Whats best for Neons?

I have 6 of them which were all added just over a week ago. I'll wait a bit longer before i add anything else to make sure the enviroment is stable. Any suggestions on good compatibles welcome. Its only a 15 gallon tank so the 1" rule has to be taken into account. It is 1" per gallon not litre eh?

Oh this fish malarky gets a bit technical but it's worth it! :good:

Cheers
