My lfs only had one of these fish left, and as I've always wanted to keep this fish I bought it. Will this fish be ok without a mate, and how do you sex them? Mine's currently in a 30g with 2 hoplo catfish and a pair of cockatoo dwarfs. I have tank space to move either.

It's almost impossible to sex them, unless you have a breeding pair then you know theres one male and one female. I don't think its a good idea to keep it alone they like to be in pairs or small groups, and if you get a pair/group they will most likely breed.

When they are not breeding they arent that agressive, but then when they do breed (and they always do) they become very protective of their fry.

And if I remeber correctly cockatoo dwarfs are south americans and like soft water, tanganyikans like hard water.

Ok thanks. Off to another favourite lfs tomorrow so will get a group of brichardis and move the cockatoos.

Brichardi are fine alone, but you do get much more out of them in a pair or group. Just remember - nothing can be kept with breeding brichardi - they'll kill em all.

Agreed. (with the killing part) I have bred 2 types of these fish, normal, everyday brichardi, who even attacked me when I went into the tank and savoryi, which are even meaner. I had a breeding group of 1 male savoryi and 2 females, and 2 chocolate plecos in a 33 gallon, 2 or so after owning the wild caught savoryi, they bred, which I didn't know they had done until I saw a dead pleco in the tank....was not a pretty sight, to say the least. Neo's are VISCIOUS fish when they are breeding....and I don't know if you are ready to raise the amount of babies that a breeding pair of brichardi are capable of producing for you. Mine spawned over 300 babies every month and believe me, that is a very diificult number of fish to try to sell, took me 8 months to sell 600 of them in a city with a million ppl and too many fish stores to count. :p As for them being alright alone, I have one left from all of the babies I had (no idea how or where he came from) and he does just fine, with my malawis :p
