yes there from Rivers in the Lake Victoria basin, they used to be popular cichlids way back in the day, but they nearly have lost all intrest in the avarage fish keeper, i stubbled apon them from modaz another avid keeper on here local to me :good: <he was wanting to rehome them as needs the space for another project, iam going to try now to breed these fishes,,hehe,,never seen them before round here, if you google them you do not find much info on them, unless iam being silly

minx get ya pooper scooper at the ready

sweet fish nelly if they bred that would be so cool really interesting to watch them gather the fry in their mouths

thanks guys, yes it should be intresting to watch them taking care of the fry, but modaz has told me, dad trys to eat them from the start, mother trys to eat them a couple days after they have left the mouth for good

yes! good luck with spawning them, he digs massive trenches and she goes and hides whilst she is brooding, i would take him out when she is hiding and then take her out as soon as she spits them out, like i said no use putting them into a floater on a temp basis as these fry at 2 days after being spat out can jump like grasshoppers.

I had a pair of these a while back and i too got rid of them because of them breeding like rabbits. They are cool little fish though and loved watching them once they spawned.
Once they have spawned, eggs have hatched, and then the fry are free swimming its funny to watch the fry dart back into the mouth when you go up to the tank, theres always 1 that doesnt make it in the mouth first time so has to wait until she opens again

I always thought they were called Egyptian mouth brooders?
