Hey peoples, my tank is nearly fully stocked and looking at it the top 1/3rd of the tank is empty apart from 3 Pearl gouramis. The tank is a 240L Rio and im looking for ideas for another topdweller or school of top dwellers, i currently have the fish listed in my stocking and once ive added the final 7 fish i will be up to over 90" of fish (fully grown calculations obviously) so is another school of fish advisable?

Would they not fight with my gouramis? or each other? or other fish? And i have quite a bit of current in my tank, if they'll be happy and peaceful in the tank ill add them but im not changing the set-up to cater for them

I would not put betta's anywhere near gouramis actually don't think they should ever be in a community either but some seem to thinl otherwise...

I was after hatchets which I think are lovely fish but please asses if they are suitable before hand. You could look at an African butterfly not sure about the safety of your harlequins though.

However if you put some floating plants in the tank you will find your gouramis will hang around the top much more and make a bubble nest too!

Dont get me wrong the gouramis do spend a lot of time at the surface but theyre only 3 small fish in a large tank

Golden Panchax x 3 1 male 2 female

Hmmm they look ok,ill research them more and check my LFS

Zebra Danios are top dwelling active schooling fish. More info can be found here.

Had danios in the past and yes they are top top swimmers but i had a bad experience with them (they dropped like flies in a tank where harlequins were completely unaffected so i think theyre not hardy...)

I hear this comment time and time again on forums stating that some people believe that bettas should never be put in a community tank..Id have to dissagree and say it all depends..

I've had my male betta in my well stocked community tank for a while now and never had ANY problems. betta is very peaceful. He never bothers the other fish and the other fish never bother him.

I think some people have had a few bad experiences with them and that is maybe why they feel like this..

Look at it this way..The ownership of pitbull terriers is banned in uk and alot of people are thankful for this as they usually are very aggressive. however....When i was young our family had a pitbull for 15 years and it was the most friendly peaceful dog you could imagine.

I understand that in some or even most cases bettas maybe wont work in communitys. However. Each animal/fish are individuals with different brain chemistry and therfore various levels of agression.

Im not the only one. i know of alot more people who successfully kept this species in their community. Granted i know more who have had problems but i think you cannot say you should never keep them with your other fish.

(looking at my betta now. Hes built a huge bubble nest just below a surface plant

Well there you have a good argument as to why it is wrong to recommend betta's in a community then! What is the point in buying a fish as a community companion if there is a 'chance' of it being attacked by, or itself attacking other fish?

Simple really..When i got my tank i was a complete novice and pretty much bought the fish my LFS recommended. When i liked the look of a betta he had he told me it would be fine.
I have learned and researched alot since then and personally i would never buy a betta for a community tank now knowing what the risks are, however, I was just stating that in my case my betta is doing great and with 0 problems.
My fishes care is number 1 priority to me and im very mindful of my tank. i've already returned a few fish to my Lfs that they suggested like my black red tailed shark and common plec and at any sign of trouble past or present i wouldnt hesitate to move my betta to his own tank.

I never "recommended" bettas for community tanks if you read my post. I simply stated that mine has always been very happy in there.

And the only reason why i posted was because the comment that stated they should NEVER be in communitys and all i was saying is. It can work in certain situations

I would have to second the panchax idea when you see adult goldens they are absolutely amazing! Though if you are lucky you can find other colours - though they are different species not different strains. But there are red ones and I've also seen a blue and purple one :) Or if you can find them some kind of halfbeak the most common are called wrestling halfbeaks they are livebearers but as far as i know not as prolific as mollies and guppies. These get to about 2 inch but i think there are some that get a bit bigger.
