let me start by saying i have a tank that is 2x1x1 with 1 large gold fish, 2 x 3 inch pleco's, 5 tetra's, 1 silver shark, 6 guppies, 4 platties, 4 colombian ramshorn snails, and 1 assin snail. its going well and has been for a while. (about a year now)
when i first stocked the tank i had 9 guppies and 6 platties with 6 tetras.
a couple have died off over the year (i had white spot.)
the pleco's and silver shark came to me via a friend who had to close down her tank coz she moved in to a smaller place. i was only supposed to look after them till she found new homes, but that dosnt look like its going to happen. lol.
they are all living fine in the tank together, so im in no rush for them to go anywhere.
the gold fish i found on a bus! so he got added to the tank coz i didnt know what else to do with him.
hes also looking happy and content and gets on fine with the other fish.
my problem was that the tank is far to small to house 2 fully grown plecos and the are growing pritty fast and so is the gold fish. (hes bigger than the pleco's now!!!)
some one gave me a 4ftx2ftx2ft tank and im planning to set it up and transfer some of the big fish in to it.
i need to know how heavy it will be once it is full and should i be reinforceing my cabnet to take the weight.
i also need to know the correct way to sanitise the tank as its second hand and i dont want any nasty's to harm my fish.
i plan to set it up and cycle for around 8 weeks is this long enough?
will it help to use some of the water from my old tanks weekly water changes to kick start the cycle?
should i place my filter media from the new tank in the the old?
any advise you can offer will be warmly recived. although ive had the tank running for a year, im still very inexperinced, i know how my fish behave but wouldnt have a clue about any one elses. lol and i dont realy know about compatability and such things. i dont test my water untill my fish start behaving differently. and when i do test it, i then go on places like this and see what people like you advise.
i think ive rambled in enough..... thanx toni
